In 1814, William, who was described as 6 feet tall, having light hair,

blue eyes and a florid complexion, left the family farm in Guilford Co,

NC to join the War of 1812. He served as a private in McQuinten's

Company, Atkinson's Regiment and is listed as a fifer.

After discharge from the military at Craney Island, VA on March 31, 1815,

William and his brother, Levi Jasper, set out for TN, staying a time in

Greenville.

William married Abenida Sigler, daughter of Phillip Siglar and Fanny

Nall. The marriage bond was posted in Grainger Co., on April 2, 1817 by

Bonsdman St. Clair F. Cladwell and the marriage was performed June 24,

1817 by William Lane, J.P.

Prior to arriving in Warren Co, William and Abenida lived in Pikeville,

Bledsoe Co, near Dayton in Rhea Co. In 1836 the family settled in Myers

Cove, southeast of McMinnville, where William owned considerable land. He

was a saddler by trade, also a politician. He served as Senator in the

22nd TN General Assembly from 1937-1839, representing Warren and Franklin

Counties. In 1844 he was a delegate to the Democratic State Convention

which nominated James K. Polk, as President of the U.S. Not surprisingly,

James K. Polk Lowry was born that same year. William was also a friend of

Andrew Jackson.
