William Allen, born in 1724, married three times and fathered twenty or twenty-one children in all. He married Sarah Ann Smith, said to be of Prince George County, Virginia about 1776. She was the daughter of Henry Smith and Tabitha Churchill. They had six children: Robert Allen, Susanna Allen, Joseph Smith Allen, Pines Allen, Ellen Ann Carter(Nancy was a favorite nickname for the formal name Ann), Frances "Fanny" Smith Allen. William Allen died in Mecklenburg County, Virginia by 13 April 1789, naming his wife Ann and all six children in the Will. (Will Book 3, p.15) Since Ann was probably only thirty-four - her age in 1830 census is given 70- 80 with six children under twelve, it was quite natural for her to marry again. She wed a wealthy bachelor named John Bailey 2 March 1791 in Mecklenburg, but moved with her new husband to Henry County. He built a large home for Ann's six children and the daughter she bore him - Tabitha Churchill Bailey. Tabitha grew up to marry, John C. Traylor, the minister of Mt. Bethel Church. John Bailey died in 1817, but Ann lived until 1838, when her Will was proven in Henry County court on 14 May. (WB 4 p. 179). William Allen, the founder of the Allen family in Henry County, Virginia was born, 1725, married three times. His first wife was Mary Lewis, of Campbell county, Virginia, and had thirteen children. Among them 'were Reuben, Meredith, Pleasant, Darling, William, James, Mrs. Mary Morgan of Alabama, Mrs. Thurman, and' Mrs. Jarred, of North Carolina. His second wife, Miss Beverley, of Essex County, Virginia, lived one year and left a son, Beverly. His third wife was Sarah Ann Smith, of Prince George County, Virginia and daughter of lawyer Harry Smith and his wife Tabitha Churchill. Mr. Allen died, by 13 Apr 1789, and left his widow with six children, Robert, Joseph Smith, Pines, Susan, Ellen/Nancy, and Fannie. Per "Allens of the Southern States", William Allen purchased land in Johnston County, North Carolina, but stayed only a few years. He then traded his land in North Carolina for a tract in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, where he remained until his death in 1789.
