Born in 1779 in the village of Monken Hadley MDX. William later moved with his family to Bloomsbury MDX. At the age of nineteen, William was indicted for 'breaking and entering the dwelling house of Stephen Wilson the elder, about the hour of seven in the night of the 26 of December 1799, with intent to steal, and stealing a pair of stays, value 18s'. His death sentence was later commuted to transportation for life. He spent time in the hulk Fortunee in Langstone harbour before his passage to Sydmey in Earl Cornwallis in 1801. William was a turner by trade and was first employed in the government lumber yard. Heworked on the General Hospital for Mr Riley and there is a record in the accounts proving that he received 117pounds for work as a turner. He signed the receipt in his own hand. A petition for mitigation of sentence in 1817 states, inter alia, 'that it was by his own hands that all the pillars of the public buildings in Sydney were turned'. William married Elizabeth Wills in 1810 and they had six children. In the 1825 census he was woeking as a chair maker in George Street, Sydney. He died in Sydney on 1 December 1829 ans was buried with two infant grandchildren in the Sandhills burial grounds NSW (2483/001).
