William Arnold, Sr.

Was a Revolutionary soilder. Lorena Martin Spillers is not sure Elizabeth's last name was Shelton but thinks that was correct. Dosen't know where he lived between 1793 when he left Stokes Co., N. C. until he came to Washington Co., Ga. Served in North Carolina.

March 15, 1781 William Arnold enlisted in the state of North Carolina, served as private in Capt. Thomas Armstrong's Company, Col. Armstrong' North Carolina Regiment; was in the battle of Eutaw Springs, in which he was wounded and was dischared May 1, 1782. He was allowed a pension on his application executed Aug. &, 1819 at which time he was age sixty years and a resident of Washington County, Ga.

In 1820, the solider referred to his "wife" Elizabeth, Aged about sixty. His pension claim 37684 is on file in Washington" and the fore-going information was sent by A. D. Hiller, Exec. Ass't to the Administrator, of the Veterans" Administration, Washington, Nov 10, 1934 to the compiler of this family record.

On July 10 1940 Mr. P. L. Fallon, Ass't Chief , Records Division, stated that "William Arnold , a pensioner of the Revolution War, Certificate No. 16001, Georgia Agencey, wa paid last pension covering period from Sept. 5, 1824 to March 4, 1825. Payment was made at Savannah Ga. on March 29, 1825 to Thomas

Please Correct a huge error:

There has been wrong information on William Arnold, Sr., husband to Elizabeth Shelton. It has been proven he was not the William Arnold, born, 1759, as listed in Lorena M. Spillers' book. He was the William Arnold, Sr., born 1749, in Cumberland Co., VA and died in Rutherford County, Tennessee, after 1834.

William and Elizabeth Shelton lived in Henry Co., Virginia and later lived for a time in Stokes Co., NC (this is where Ms. Spillers made a big mistake and mixed him with the William Arnold, Sr., b1759 and died in Washington Co., Georgia.)

In 1793, William sold his Stokes Co., NC property and moved to Granger Co., TN, where Elizabeth had brothers. In 1806, now living in Rutherford Co., TN, he wrote a will, naming his children (he was not the father of an Ambrose nor Thomas Arnold). Later, in Rutherford County, he applied for a Rev. War pension. He was turned down for not enough time in service.
