His Inquisition Post Mortem at Leicester on 10 May 1500 recorded that he died on 14 January last past. He was seised of the manors of Lowesby, Cosby and Littlethorpe, and twenty messuages, forty virgates of land and 30s. rent in Lowesby, Cosby and Littlethorpe, worth 60l., held of the prince, as of the honour of Huntyngdon, service unknown; a messuage and five virgates of land in Long Whatton, worth 73s., held of the lord Beamond, service unknown; three messuages, a cottage and five virgates of land, in Newton Burdet, worth 4 marks, held of the lord Lisle, service unknown; and three pounds of pepper, three capons and 3s. quit rent, in Bagrave and 2s. rent and two hens, in Southcroxton and Baresby, worth 9s., held of Thomas Pulteney, knight, service unknown. Long before his death he enfeoffed Ralph Shyrley, knight, Thomas Pulteney, knight, Thomas Kebeell, serjeant at law, and William Smyth (son in law William Heriz, alias Smith) with his estates, for the performance of his last will. William Assheby, aged 30 and more, was his son and heir.[1]
The Inquisition Post Mortem at Derby on 29 April 1500 found that he had given his manor of Chellaston and ten messuages, a mill, 300a. land, 100a. meadow, 40s. quit rent (liberi redditus), in Chellaston and Osmaston, worth 20 marks, held of the king, as of the honour of Tutbury, by reason of his duchy of Lancaster, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee, to his son William and Agnes his wife during his lifetime.[2] Chellaston had been settled on William and Agnes at their marriage.[3]
The source which makes William the father of both Everard Ashby and George Ashby has William pre-deceasing his father in 1427.[4]
Were that the case it would be highly unlikely that he could have been grandfather of William Ashby MP who has to have been born around 1530. Looking at the other dates within the source makes death for William 1427 appear to be an error meant to be DOB.
Husband of Agnes Illingworth. The Visitation pedigree has conflated him with his son, husband of Agnes Pulteney. The IPM (1500) shows the younger William as his son and heir. Assheby is the spelling in the primary sources (IPM, marriage settlements of his daughter Ann and relative George Assheby).
