Bill was a very gifted musician and artist. He painted portraits of his own parents and that of his mother-in-law in oils. The former (his parent's) are in the possession of his grandson, Ian Walsh.

He was well know for his ability to write the Lord's Prayer and 23rd Psalm in small areas. He could write the Lord's Prayer on the sixth of a threepence and the 23rd Psalm on less than half a standard postage stamp.

He also was an excellent signwriter using gold leaf on occasions.

THE EARLY SETTLERS
The European discovery of the Singleton area occurred in 1820 by John Howe and was named for Benjamin Singleton, who was a member of the discovery expedition. It was first known as St Patrick's Plains in honour of Ireland's patron saint, and shortened to Patrick's Plains as the name of the shire area and council. Settlement followed rapidly, with 300 land grants to 206 settlers within five years.

DISTRICT COUNCIL
The District Council of Patrick Plains was appointed in 1843, and the Municipality of Singleton proclaimed in 1866. The councils amalgamated in 1975 and the shire of Singleton was inaugurated the following year.
