William Noel Battles Our Revolutionary War Ancestor

(Resident of Oglethorpe co GA circa 1800-1805, then St. Clair Co, Ala between 1816-1840)

This book is a biography relating the events in the life of Noel Battles during his service in the Revolutionary War. He served in the 10th and 6th Virginia Regiments under Generals Weeden, Greene and Wayne. This information is verified with copies of William Noel's account of the war as stated on his pension record, pay roll, and company muster roll. The original copies are included plus a typed record of Noel's pension as he related the information to the County Clerk of St. Clair County Alabama. It includes his Last Will and Testament, naming his heirs and children.

Noel married Elizabeth Hopper, daughter of Thomas Hopper, 20 March 1786 in Amherst County, Virginia. He was married under the name of Noell Battlesby and that name is frequently found in records in Oglethorpe County, Georgia (Note: I see him on the 1800 Oglethorpe co GA census as William Battles, age 45+, and on a couple early county tax lists after that, but not much else for that county).

This is a very interesting book from the historical standpoint and certainly helpful to anyone researching the Battles surname. There are eighty seven pages- paper back book. Researched and Compiled by Grace McCullough Thornton. P.O. Box 5107 Alvin, TX 77512 (as of July 1985)
