About William Bolling, Jr.
William Bolling, Jr., was the son of William Bolling and Ann Sims (Annister on some records). He was born in Orange County, Virginia, between 1736 and 1744. He enlisted in the 2nd Virginia. Regt. on February 7, 1777. He was a casualty of war. It is not known if he died of disease or in battle.
William's death has been variously recorded as July-August, 1778, as July 11, 1779, and as Aug. 20, 1778. The first one is mostly like true (see below). There is no source for the second date. The third date, August 20, 1778, refers to a soldier in Capt. Peter Bernard's Co., sick at Valley Forge Aug. 4, 1778, died Aug. 20, 1778 in service. It should be noted that a William Bolling, son of James Bolling of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, DID die at Valley Forge. It is possible there there is confusion between the two identical names.
William's brother John appeared at the Orange County court to petition for administration of his brother's eates. Here is the record of that appearance:
Orange County Minute Book 3, page 116: At a court held March 27, 1792
John Bolling made it appear to the Court that he is heir at law to William Bolling, his brother, who enlisted as soldier in the 2nd Virginia Regiment on Feb. 7, 1777 in the company commanded by Capt. Dudley and that William Bolling died in the month of July or August 1778 while in the service, which was proved by Peachy Bledsoe, who was a Sgt. in said Regiment. Ordered to be recorded.
William Bolling, Jr., did not marry and left no children.
