About Anne Bolling

Anne Sims was the wife of William Bolling of Orange County, Virginia. She died in Orange County, Virginia in about 1790. Her father is believed to be William Sims of Orange County, Virginia. Some sources give her name as Annister, while others use Annister as her mother's name. She was the mother of at least 6 children.

For many years it was thought that her youngest son Samuel was not her child, but the child of a William Bolling and Amelia Randolph. A fake pedigree, including Bible entries was used to gain admittance to DAR and other genealogical organizations. Dedicated researchers determined that the timeline did not make sense and that the bible entry was a fake. Current DNA studies have confirmed that Samuel is not the son of William and Amelia Randolph Bolling, but is truly the son of William and Ann Sims Bolling.

Anne's parentage is not entirely clear. Her father is believed to be William Sims of Orange County, Virginia because William Sims is named in a 1753 deed, with wife Annister, transferring land in Orange County, Virginia to William Bolling. This is most likely a transfer to Anne's husband, William Bolling of Orange, VA. Other sources believe that Anne's mother was Agatha Stepp, but no documents prove the relationship. It is possible that William Sims was married to both, but it is unknown which woman was Anne's mother.

In October 1777, Anne appeared in court, seeking relief because three sons (William, Jesse and Thornberry) were all serving in the army and had all been at home to be nursed back to health. Jesse died after three weeks. William and Thornberry recovered enough to return to duty. On October 30, 1777, her request was referred to the Committee on Public Claims; Virginia House of Assembly --

To the Honourable the Assembly of Virginia

The Petition of Ann Boling humbly sheweth that she had three sons in the Minute and Regular Service in which service they all became sick, two of them about five months, the other about three weeks and died at her house. The two which recovered is now in the Regular Service. Your petitioner being in low circumstances and has suffered with nursing and paying docters more then she can well bare prays some relief and your petitioner shall pray &c

Orange County, John Boling & Joseph Bell made oath before me this day that Thornsberry Boling in the Regular Service, William & Jesse Boling in the Minute Service all came to their mother, Ann Boling some time as near as they can recollect October 1776 Jesse Boling lived about three weeks and died. The other two was very unwell all the winter and to both their knowledge was very troublesome and expensive to the mother who is a Poor Woman. Certified under my hand this 17 Oct 1777. Rowland Thomas

Docketed, October 30, 1777; referred to Committe on Public Claims; noted as "reasonable," with an allowance apparently being made to the petitioner.

Anne left a will, dated February 20, 1790 and filed in Orange County, Virginia. She named daughter Sarah and son Thornberry, both of whom apparently had no heirs at that time. It is possible that they were caring for Anne in her widowhood. The will was proven in court June 28, 1790, with son Thornberry as executor --

Orange County Will Abstracts 1778-1821, p. 30 (pp. 216-217) Will of Ann Bollin. .. To my son, Thornberry Bollin and my daughter, Sarah Bollin .. Appoint my son, Thornberry Bollin, executor .. This 20th day of February 1790.
