William Harold Bongard was born in Thames, Coromandel, New Zealand on 9 March 1924. His father William was a chemist at Thames and owned Bongard's Pharmacies there from 1905. William Harold would go on to own Bongard's Pharmacy Ltd in Greerton, Tauranga, which still exists today. From from 1970-1976 he was Chairman of the Tauranga Colleges Board of Governors [Order dated 1 June 1966]. William received an OBE in the 1989 New Years Honours "For services to education." The family lived in Greerton, and Bongard Street in Gate Pā is named for him. William died in Tauranga on 23 March 2010 and was buried in Pyes Pā Cemetery. Bio by Debbie McCauley (22 April 2022).
