From "The Heritage of Catawba County, North Carolina, 1986", Item #79, page 69: by Mrs Gwen Bost Sherril, an eighth generation Bost who descends through William's son Elias. Posted on GenForum by Carroll Creitz, December 22, 1998.)
William Bost (Geman - Johannes Wilhelm Bast) was one of the pre-Revolutionary pioneer settlers in Catawba County. The name BAST was Anglicized to Bost in North Carolina. All who are related to this family are descendants of Johannes Bast. who was the early settler in North Carolina by the name of Bast or Bost.
William, the oldest son of Johannes and his sister Anna Marie were confirmed October ?8, 1753, in Williams Township Congregation (Lutheran) Church, now St. Luke¹s in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. It is also recorded there that he took communion late in the summer of 1754. The name of William¹s mother is unknown but his father married a second time to Susanna Catherine before 1740.
The Bost family moved to North Carolina in 1754 and settled in a community of Germans near St. John¹s Lutheran Church in what is now Cabarrus County. Most of the family remained in the Cabarrus and Rowan community areas according to Mary Pegram West, the Bost historian.
William married 19 January 1762 (Anson County bond) Catherine Goodhart of whose family nothing more has been learned. On August 28, 1762, in Rowan County, William received an Earl Granville grant of land for 565 acres of land on Clark¹s Creek in Lincoln County (now Catawba). The young couple likely moved to their land and at once set about building a house and barns and clearing land to place crops. William added more acreage to his holdings. When his three sons were grown, each was deeded a tract of land cut from the homeplace.
Johanes must have taught his sons to read and write as none of them, including William, used an X mark to sign his name. On January 9, 1775, the Rowan County Court appointed William as constable in his area. The Mecklenburg County Court, in January 1777, named him to serve as one of the two administrators to settle his father¹s estate. And in the official bonds, in loose court papers and records, is recorded his 1782 appointment as deputy Sheriff in Burke County for that year. (William¹s acreage has always been here in now Catawba County. But because of the county¹s formation and the enactments which changed the Lincoln-Burke County line before it¹s settlement, one may find documents on William Bost in all these counties)
William and four of his brothers: Elias (1747-1822), John (1743-1794), Jacob (1753-1830) and George (died 1808) served in the Revolutionary War and are listed in the DAR Patriot Index. Johanes Bast is on the approved ancestor list for Daughters of American Colonists. Descendants have the credentials to join SAR, DAR, and DAC.
Through research it is known that William¹s brother, Elias married Katherine, John married Catreena Shuford, daughter of John Shuford of Lincoln, now Catawba County; Jacob married Catherine Cress; George married Hannah Gregory; his brother Leonhardt Bast was born in 1740 but nothing more is known about him. His sister Anna Marie (Mary), married Mark House (Max Haus) and half sister Margaret, married Jacob Faggart, Jr. son of Jacob ³Fegget². Other half sisters were Maria Catherina, Margaretha Barbara, Elizabeth, a daughter (name unknown), Dorothy and Christena. *See below
William died in late 1822 as his will was probated in Loncoln County Court January 1823. His widow was alive in 1824 when the estate was settled. In his will he names his wife, Catherine, and their children: Utilla, wife of John Smier; Margaret, wife of Adam Winkler; Magdalena, wife of Andrew Sitz; Catherine, wife of Conrad Bost; Elizabeth, the youngest daughter and sons John, Elias, and William. Graves for William and Catherine have not been been found. It is believed they were buried in Old St. Paul¹s Church graveyard where so many Bost kin lie buried.
The families of William¹s children have been folowed. Elizabeth never married. The Adam Winkler family migrated to Kentucky; Andrew Sitz moved his family to Tennessee; John married Alice ? and early in 1817 moved to Tennessee. Catherine (born ca. 1779) married her first cousin, Conrad Bost (ca 1775-ca 1815), son of John and Catreena (Shuford) Bost. Conrad died young leaving five children. They were Joseph, Susannah, Silas, Elizabeth and Jacob Bost. Catherine, who died in 1845, is buried in Old St. Paul¹s graveyard. Utilla (1764-1834) married John Smier/Smyer (1760-1846) and resided here in now Catawba County. They became the parents of The North Carolina Smyers and are buried at Old St. Paul¹s in unmarked graves. They had six sons and three daughters. John, Daniel, Jacob, Elias, David, George, Sarah, Catherine, and Mary Ann Smyer. Elias Bost (1772-1857) married Mary M. Ikerd (ca. 1775-1841) and they lie buried at Old St. Paul¹s. Their nine children are Jonas, Salome, Jonathan, Nancy, Jesse, Mary, Leah, Eli, and William Robert Davidson Bost. William, Jr. (ca. 1775-1840), who married Catherine Ikerd, sister of Mary M., has a tombstone in Old St. Paul¹s Cemetery but Catherine has no marked grave there. Catherine was born ca. 1783 according to the 1850 Catawba County census. Her estate was settled in 1857. Their children were a daughter (name unknown), Eliza, Margaret, Daniel, Sarah, Lawson, Mary, Elizabeth, Salena, Rhoda, Jemimah, Jethroe.
Descendants of Pioneer William and Catherine Bost are scattered from the Atlantic to the Pacific and many have been prosperous and successful. They are good citizens and church members with many who still cling to the Lutheran faith.
There are three old Bost homes still standing in Catawba County. (1) The Elias Bost house is on part of the original land grant to William Bost. Family tradition has it that William and Catherine lived northwest of this house. It was also known as the Ann Bost Place, and after her death, the Charlie Burrus Place. A descendant still resides here. (2) The Jonas Bost home in Newton is being restored by Joe Knox, a descendant. And (3) The Joseph Bost home has been restored and is located near Startown.
On October 12, 1975, over two hundred Bost kin gathered at Old St. Paul¹s Church for a memorial service honoring William Bost and to dedicate the handsome six foot granite stone in the church yard which gives the names of William, Catherine and their children with a brief account of his life. It was with great love of family that descendants subscribed to this stone. The excess funds from this subscription were donated to Old St. Paul¹s Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund.
From legal documents, church and family records, the early story of William Bost and his family has been pieced together. I am an eighth generation Bost and descend through William¹s son Elias. --- Mrs. Gwen Bost Sherrill.
*The statement above that William's half-sister Margaret married Jacob Faggart Jr. is in error the dates on their tombstones indicate that the Margaret who marries Jacob was the daughter of Elias, (Williams half-brother). ---James Hill---

  • The statement above that William's half-sister Margaret married Jacob Faggart Jr. is in error the dates on their tombstones indicate that the Margaret who marries Jacob was the daughter of Elias, (Williams half-brother). ---James Hill---

Children of William Bost and Catherine Goodhart are:

             i. Mathilda Othello Bost, born Abt. 1764 in Lincoln Co., NC; died 1834 in North Carolina; married John Smyre II May 17, 1785 in Lincoln Co., NC; born June 16, 1752 in Berks Co., PA; died January 08, 1846 in Catawba Co., NC.

Notes for John Smyre II:

The Schmires emigrated on the ship Neptune into Philadelphia in 1753.

ii. Elizabeth Bost, born Abt. 1765 in Never married.
iii. John Bost, born Abt. 1766 in Lincoln Co., NC; died Bet. 1838 - 1840 in Warren Co., TN; married (1) Alice Unknown; born Abt. 1788 in North Carolina; died September 1859 in Grundy Co., TN; married (2) Unknown Spouse Abt. 1790 in Lincoln Co., NC.

Notes for John Bost:

John moved his family from North Carolina to (then) Warren Co., TN, early in 1817 along with other Bost Relatives who probably included several children of John & and Catreena (Shuford) Bost. In the 1820 Census of Warren County, the only Bost listed is David Boss 200011-10010:

The following presumed family was suggested by Gene Killian:

1 male, 45/ov--(John Bost age 55)

1 male, 26-44--(David Bost age 26)

1 female, 26-44--(Barbara Killian Bost age 23, wife of David)

1 male, 0-9--(Noah Bost age 10, son of John)

1 male, 0-9--(Jacob A. Bost son of David)

1 female, 0-9--(Barbara Bost age <1, daughter of David)

John's wife Alice is missing from this census

1830 Census, Warren Co., TN: 100010001-00010001

1 Male, 60-70 (John)

1 female, 50-60 (Alice)

1 male, 20-30 (Noah)

1 Female 15-20 (Wife of Noah - name unknown)

1 male, 0-5 (John R., son of Noah and unknown)

John is listed in the 1838 Warren County Tax List but he is missing from the 1840 census. John's will was settled August 05, 1841, by his son Noah (Warren Co., Will Book 1, p.380).

It has been suggested by Gene Killian (descendant of Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Bost, b. 1790/92, NC and Daniel Killian, b. 1790, NC) that John was the son of John and Catreena (Shuford) Bost. He states, "In LincNC, only one John Bost is listed in each census of 1790 through 1810. However, it seems that John 1 Bost of the 1790 LincNC census (Note: John 1 died 1793.) had a son with the same name who was listed in the LincNC 1800-1810 census then moved to Warren Co., TN before 1820. That son was apparently John 2 b. ca. 1765."

NOTE: I believe that the statement that John lived in Lincoln (Catawba) County to be in error. William (his half-brother) deeded land from his grants to each of his three sons as they came of age. The John Living in Lincoln Co., NC in 1790 -1800 - 1810 would be John Son of William who married Alice (?) and migrated to Tennessee in 1817. - James Hill

Note by Virginia Bost Arnold 8th generation:

Gene has worked of his family history for nearly 28 years and his theory could very well be correct. However, I am leaving the parents as previously shown to be William and Catherine (Goodhart) Bost until further research and study can be conducted.

Information from Gene Killian: John & Alice raised Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Bost, daughter of John and Catreena (Shuford) Bost. Elizabeth was born about 1790 (Some sources list birth as 1788). As mentioned earlier, her father died aoubt 1793. Her mother died about 1797. Elizabeth married Daniel Killian, Born about 1790, son of Andres Killian Sr. Gene is the gg grandson of Daniel and Elizabeth (Bost) Killian.

Alice was living with her son Noah in the 1840 Warren Co. and the 1850 Grundy Co., TN censuses. The 1860 Mortality Schedule for Grundy Co., TN reads "Bost, Allis, age 80, sex -- female, born -- GA, month died -- - Sept. (1859), cause of death -- old age, days ill - - 6 months, notes -- widowed.

iv. Margaret Bost, born Abt. 1769 in Rowan Co., NC; died Abt. 1816 in Knottsville, Davies Co., KY; married Adam Winkler 1785 in Burke Co., NC; born July 1770 in Burke Co., NC; died January 23, 1844 in Knottsville, Davies Co., KY.

Notes for Adam Winkler:

From "Ancestors & Relatives of the family of Alphonse Roscoe Winkler"

(Hamilton Co., Ill. Library):

Adam's father arrived in Philadelphia, Pa. on ship Neptune on or about 09/23/1753. This ship sailed from Rotterdam "and last from Cowes" (England) From "Ancestors & Relatives of the family of Alphonse Roscoe Winkler" (Hamilton Co., Ill. Library)

Note on Adam Winkler crossing the Appalachin mountains from N.C. into Ky in 1790 with his family, including his small son George. They settled in Washington Co., perhaps in the Fort Harrod area and later moved into Davies Co. in about 1812. The log home where they lived was located across the Winkler-Mt. Zion Road from the Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church, near Knottsville Ky. It was converted into a frame house by F. Monroe Winkler around the 1920's and was replaced by a completely new house by Adam's great - grandson, Rupery Winkler in the 1970's. Possession of this house, and farm, went from Adam to his son William and was owned by the Winkler descendants for over 125 years. Adam was in war of 1812. - History of Daviess County, Kentucky, Inter-StatePublishing Co., Chicago, 1883. Reprinted by McDowell Publications, Utica,KY, 1980. p. 629.

"WILLIAM WINKLER, born in Washington County, Ky., Oct.3, 1801, is a son of Adam Winkler, a native of North Carolina, who settled in Washington County during the Revolution [sic], and in 1812 brought his family to Daviess County and settled in the woods in Knottsville Precinct.

Indians and wild animals were plenty, but at that time, though the Indians were peaceable. Adam Winkler lived to see many changes in this county before his death. William Winkler married Eliza Adams. Of their twelve children but three are living - Hiram, William and Joseph F.

Mrs. Winkler died June 14, 1844, and June 18, 1846, Mr. Winkler married Alcy Hale, who died Dec. 16, 1881. Mr. Winkler has been a hard-working man and is now, in his eighty-second year, enjoying a peaceful old age."

- @1843 - Court ordered that Adam Winkler be exempt from the payment of County Levies on account of his age andinfirmities.

- 1844 - Court appointed Commissioners to "set apart and allot to said Lettis Winkler by meter and bounds her dower of, in, and to the lands of her deceased husband, AdamWinkler...".

-1/8/ 1844 - William Winkler appointed administrator of the estate of Adam Winkler.

Notes for Johannes Bast/Bost:

HIST: "Johannes Bast was an educated German, a farmer, the father of fourteen children and all were ardent Lutherans. The first records found to date are in the History of Old Williams Township Congregation (Lutheran) of Bucks County, PA but now in Northampton County due to county line changes. Here we find the names of his wife, Susanna Catharina, and nine of his children. Their church activities are set forth from 1740 until the late summer 1754".

HIST: "It is safe to assume that the whole family left Pennsylvania by early fall 1754 and came to North Carolina where they settled in this community of many German families. Johannes secured a land grant on Adams Creek, west of St. John's Church. Some of his descendants are living there today. Traces of the old John Bost Meeting House Road remain on the farm even though the road has not been used for several generations. His land was within walking distance of the church. Johannes died in late 1777 but Susanna Catharina was living in 1787. Both must have been buried at St. John's but their grave stones have crumbled long ago."

HIST: "Johannes signed his name Johannes Bast and we have kept his spelling for our Pioneer Ancestor. In later years it was Anglicized to Bost and so remains today. This family is not to be confused with the French Huguenot of the same name - Bost - which fled France and years later some came to America".

HIST: "North Carolina has always been noted for its patriotic citizens. Feeling was strong against the British Crown before and during the Revolution. British soldiers tortured St. John's beloved first Pastor, Adolph Nussmann, and he later died from these unhealed wounds. Thus, we can understand why the Bost family took an active part in the cause for freedom".

HIST: "Four of the five living sons; Willliam, Elias, Jacob, and George are proven soldiers and patriots. There are documents indicating that John also served. William settled early in what is now Catawba County, but Elias, Jacob and George remained in the community near St. John's. Jacob was on the first Board of Elders of this church".

On October 20, 1974, at 3 p.m. at St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Concord, North Carolina, a memorial was dedicated honoring early ancestors of the Bost families of North Carolina.

The inscription on the stone reads: "In memory of Johannes Bast, died 1777, and his wife, Susannah Catherina. Migrated 1754 from Bucks County, Pennsylvania to the upper end of Adams Creek west of here. Faithful Lutherans, Pioneer Ancestors of the Bost Families of North Carolina. Placed by Descendants 1974.

An early account by Geo. M. Yoder c. 1910 mentions that William Bost's mother was Mary Cline, daughter of Sebastian Cline. Mary Cline supposedly was the wife of Johannes Bast/Bost, (prior to his marriage to Susannah Catherina----)and the mother of William Bost.

This Mary Cline, daughter of Sebastian Cline, was born abt. 1755. She was some 35 years younger than Johannes Bost, and 17 years younger than William Bost. Given this info, it hardly seems possible that she was the wife of Johannes, nor the mother of William Bost.

Children of Johannes Bast/Bost and Spouse Unknown are:

16 i. William Bost, born Abt. 1738 in Bucks Co., PA; died January 1823 in Lincoln Co., NC; married Catherine Goodhart January 19, 1762 in Anson, NC.
ii. Anna Marie Bost, born Abt. 1738 in Bucks Co., PA; died Aft. 1790 in Cabarrus Co., NC; married Mark House; born February 1741/42 in Wurttemberg, Baden, Germany; died Bef. 1790 in Cabarrus Co., NC.

Notes for Mark House:

He was a tax collector in Mecklenblurg Co. in 1778.

On Nov. 2, 1784 a grant of 295 acres was made to Marx Haus on Adams Creek. Source is Mecklenburg Deeds 2,or 12:a675 and 609.

Notes for John Shuford:

Emigration: 28 SEP 1733 Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania

John or as he is also known as, Johannes, accompanied his father and mother to Philadelphia aboard the ship "Richard and Elizabeth," which landed on 28 Sept. 1733. He grew up and married in Pennsylvania.

Occupation: John prospered as cattle farmer. North Carolina

During the American Revolution, John initially supported the British, but later supplied the patriots with arms and ammununition and is listed in the North Carolina Book of Patriots.

1998: Joy Turner Luke provided the following: This material is from a Tyler, Texas newspaper in 1935. There are quite a few persons in Tyler who answer to the name of Shuford, and every person who has Shuford for a name is said to be a direct descendant of one John Shuford, who came to this country from Palatinate, Germany in the year 1750 to settle about 12 miles South of Hickory, N. C. Some of the local descendants include seventh generation, L. E., Ed, H. D. and Zelda Shuford, Mrs. Ruby Judge and Mrs. Walter Jones, who present different branches of the family. The eighth generation includes Harry Shuford, star on the national championship Southern Methodist University football team; Emer Shuford, assistant cashier of the Citizens National bank, and Miss. Martha Shuford. The names was originally spelled Shuferdt, but was "Anglonized" in the 1800's, the "e" being dropped from the name altogether. The first Shuford to come to America owned around 1,000 acres of land south of here, and the R. L. Shuford farm is a part of the original 1,000 acre tract. The Shuford farm is known as Oak Wood. Four hundred acres of the tract remains in the hands of Mr. Shuford, a direct descendant. The old Shuford graveyard is on the farm. John Shuford (Shuferdt) is buried in the plot, as are other members of the first generations of the Shuford family. W. J. Shuford, who says he is a direct descendant of the fourth or fifth generations of Shufords, said that when his forefather Shuford settled in North Carolina, Catawba County was part of Lincoln County. The original will made by John Shuford in 1788 is an old German Bible, which is now the property of Jacob Patton, of Morganton, who is also a direct descendant of John Shuferdt. A copy of the will, just as it was taken from the old Bible follows. No corrections whatsoever have been made in the spelling. Gold is spelled gole and manner is maner.

"IN THE NAME OF GOD, Amen the Third Day of June in the year of Our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty Eight, I John Shufert of the county of Lincoln and State of North Carolina, being of Good health and of perfect Mind and Memory, yet Calling to Mind the Mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to Die, Do Make and Publish this my Last will and testament in Maner and form following, that is to Say the first place. Children of John Shuford and Mary Conrad are:

             i. Catreena Shuford, born Abt. 1750 in Catawba, NC; died Abt. 1797 in Catawba, NC; married John (Johannes) Bast/Bost Abt. 1768; born August 23, 1743 in Bucks Co., PA; died 1793 in Rockwell, Rowan Co., NC.

Notes for John (Johannes) Bast/Bost:

"John Bost, second son of Johannes and Susannah Catharina Bast, was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, 23 August 1743 and baptized October 1743 in Williams Township Congregation Lutheran Church. In the fall of 1754 the Bast family migrated to now Cabarrus County, North Carolina settling on Adams Creek in a community of other Germans. Later the name Bast was Anglicized to Bost. Research proves that this is the only Bost family in North Carolina, and all who trace their Bost lineage to North Carolina are descendants of Pioneer Johannes Bast."

"John married Catreena Shuford who was the daughter of John Shuford of Catawba County. He (John Bost) was a soldier in the American Revolution. His four brothers William, Elias, Jacob and George also had service in the Revolution, and their graves have been so marked."

"In May 1778, John attended the sale to settle his father's estate and he is listed as an heir. He obtained two land grants. The first was on Adams Creek just south of the Rowan County line, which was later deeded to his son, Conrad. In 1790, he was living on the second grant, not far from his brother William in Catawba County. He and Catreena had ties in both Catawba and Cabarrus counties. Cabarrus Court records establish 1793 as the year of his death, when only fifty years of age. Catreena likely died about 1797/8. Their graves have not been found. Organ Lutheran is the only church with extant records indicating John was a member. Because of the early deaths of John and Catreena, their children were scattered while young."

Hi,

I also am trying to start looking for my Ancesters and have come to a stopping point and need alittle help. I live in Catawba County, NC so I am pretty sure that I come from Johannes Bast somehow. I have collected a bunch of information about the Johannes Bast/Bost tree, but I cannot where I fit in.

I know for certain through the Census/Newspaper articles/Family History that my Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather is Robert Lee Bost (May 28 1865-Unkown). However I cannot link him with certainty to the Johannes Bast tree. I have found an 1870 census report that a Sidney Bost had a son named Robert at age 5 (which about when Robert Lee Bost was born). I think that Sidney is actually Leander Sidney Bost (1828-1908). If anybody has any more information regarding this link please feel free to email me @ jnhager@yahoo.com

I will post the decensant tree of Johannes Bast that I have done so far here which I have compiled from online databases and The Hertiage of Catawba County. Please email me with any questions, corrections, or comments at jnhager@yahoo.com.

Yours in Cyberspace,

John Hager
