Revolutionary War Soldier

Court Inquiry of death: Owen Dry was one of a jury appointed on 13 Oct 1822 "to view the body of Elias Bost who was found dead in a shed adjoining the dwelling of the aforesaid Bost, across a chest in said shed. After being duly sworn do make and return the following verdict -viz- That on viewing the body of the dec. thire appeared no external injury either directly or indirectly and from the evidence examined it appeared that the said dec. had been afflicted several days with a violent Dipsentary and from every appearance in the shed which he lay he must have come by his death by the effects of said disease."

signed by Owen Dry and several other jury members.

The following is a direct quote from "The Heritage of Cabarrus County North Carolina", by Deane C. Flowers, Item # 247, Page 90:

"Elias BAST was born on June 24, 1747 in Pennsylvania. He was baptized at the Old William's Township Congregation Lutheran Church of Northampton County, Pennsylvania. His parents were Johannes BAST and Susannah Catharina (maiden name UNKNOWN). His parents migrated in 1754 from Bucks County, Pennsylvania to the upper end of Adams Creek, in what is now Cabarrus County. He married Katherine (maiden name UNKNOWN) who was born in June 1753. They were the parents of five known children:

  • 1. Margaret, born October 12,1773, died and married Jacob Faggart, Jr.; (According to Mary Pegram West this Margaret was the daughter of Johannes Bast)
  • 2. Daniel, born January 22, 1774, died December 25,1847, and married Elizabeth Nussman;
  • 3. Mary Elizabeth, born June 16, 1778, died January 19,1855, and married Daniel Faggart;
  • 4. John H., born June 13,1783, died May 4, 1845, and married Catherine Boger; and
  • 5. Soloman, born April 29,1794, died December 8,1855.

Elias, along with two of his brothers, Jacob and George, fought in the Revolutionary War. He was a devoted family man and a very devout Lutheran. He was a member of the historic St. John's Lutheran Church. He died on October 12,1822, and Katherine died on August 26,1826. Both he and Katherine are buried at St. John's Lutheran Church.

The Elias BAST house is still standing in Catawba County on part of the original land grant to William Bost. Family tradition has it that William and Catherine lived northwest of this house. It has also been known as the Ann BOST Place, and after her death, the Charlie BURRUS Place. A descendant still resides here."

Note: David Long, a descendant of Elias BAST, questions the above statement about the residence of his Elias being in Catawba County, N. C. The Elias who lived in Catawba was most likely Elias (ca.1772 - 1857), the son of Johann Wilhelm BOST (ca 1738/9-1811?) Elias BOST, 1747-1822, remained in the St. Johns area of Cabarrus County where his father, Johannes, obtained a land grant on Adams Creek.

Wasn't sure what this was supposed to signify. Misplaced into baptismal place name field.
