About William Bowker Surmon
He was in the Bechuanaland Police at the turn of the century and travelled everywhere on foot shooting for the pot. He left a pen knife at one kraal and it was returned to him a year later when he went there again.
He was a very fine shot in spite of having only one eye. He had lost an eye playing 'bows and arrows' as a child.
He moved to 'Champagne' in 1915 bringing his hunting trophies and lived there until he died. In the latter part of his life he was blind in his remaining eye and his hearing was failing.
He was a good linguist and spoke Sesuto and Bechuana well.
He died on 'Champagne' Farm.
