About William Quartes Surmon
Information from 'Descendants of Miles Bowker':
He followed in his father's and Octavius' footsteps in that he was a good shot and very keen on hunting. In 1946 he came to 'Champagne' to manage it for his father who had lost his sight. The farm was known for its fine wool and large orchard of
deciduous fruit. At that time they used two furrow hand ploughs drawn by Clydesdale horses. jackals and Lynx were a great problem to the sheep farmer and had to be hunted. All the animals had to be dipped every two weeks as the ticks caused paralysis
and other diseases.
