By the time the Revolutionary War was beginning, Brown was in Philadelphia and a Captain in the Pennsylvania Navy. Brown’s original task was to build the marines by recruiting throughout Philadelphia, but by October of 1776, Brown was assigned to the flagship Montgomery where he would be in charge of 64 young marines.

It was not long after taking charge of the Montgomery that Brown was tasked with arguably his most significant role in the entire war: assisting General Washington in his famed crossing of the Delaware. Working with Washington and the Continental Army, as well as Captain John Barry (serving as senior commander of the Port of Philadelphia at the time) and a group of volunteers, Captain Brown helped to organize and execute the crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas Day in 1776. While many of the marines continued to fight alongside Washington at the Battles of Trenton and Princeton, Captain Brown was ordered to return to Philadelphia as a last hope for protection in case the Continental Army suffered a defeat in Trenton.

Brown continued serving in the Navy for the remainder of the war, eventually bringing the floating battery Putnam to Fort Mifflin in November of 1777 in response to a distress signal, sounded when the British campaign seized control of Philadelphia and the Delaware River.
