About William Dudley, of Guilford

William Dudley, of Guilford, has been shown to be the son of William Dudley, of Dorking. There is another William Dudley, son of David of Dorking, who has been confused with this William. #There is a chance of confusion here between Guildford & Dorking - two popular towns in the UK (Will Chapman)#

Located in North Guilford, CT at the junction of routes 77 and 80, Dudley Farm was in the same family for about 350 years. In 1991 David Dudley willed the farm to the North Guilford Volunteer Fire Department who has worked to help create a private, nonprofit foundation to oversee the 10-acre farm, farmhouse and barn buildings as a working farm.

William Dudley, a son of David Dudley (sic), was the first of this line in the family of the lords of Dudley to move to Connecticut, and founded the settlement of Guilford, on the shores of Long Island Sound. He emigrated to New England sometime between 1636/43. Note Wm. Dudley was the father of Ruth Dudley, who married into the Whittlesea family.

Three of William Dudley's great grandsons were to give their family name to their new home in the Cornwall hills, when they moved to Owlsbury from Guilford in the mid C17. Owlsbury was renamed Dudleytown, and thereafter the persistent legend of America's most haunted town was born.

"The Dudleytown Historic District, also known as Clapboard Hill is a historic district in Guilford, Connecticut, located about 1.5 miles northeast of the town center. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.[1] The district includes examples of Colonial Revival, Early Republic, and Greek Revival architecture. The area was originally the property of William Dudley, one of the original English settlers of the town of Guilford in 1639, and includes a cemetery, agricultural outbuildings, a school, and other buildings. Many of the properties are still owned by descendants of the Dudley family." (Wikipedia)

William Dudley came from County Surrey, England. He may have been born at Richmond (formerly Sheen), but Banks thought he emigrated from Docking parish. The will of Daniel Dudley, wheelwright, of Doking, proved in 1646, mentioned his wife Joanna and six children (Thomas, Jane, William, Daniel David, and Edward). however with no indication the son William had emigrated. There have been efforts to connect Willliam Dudley with the more illustrious Governor Thomas Dudley, of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but a relationship has never been established.

William Dudley married Jane Lutman of Wysborough Green at Ockley, Surrey on 24 August 1636. They were married by Rev. Henry Whitfield, rector of Ockley, in Surrey, England. The rector, the Rev. Henry Whitfield, led the group from Guilford (the Eaton and Hopkins Expedition) which left London on 20 May 1639 on the "Sergeant John." Arriving about 10 September at Quinnipiack, now New Haven, William Dudley was one of the twenty-five men who signed the covenant in which they pledged to stand by each other in their enterprise. This group founded the settlement of Guilford.
The couple's first child (William) was born at sea about two days before the landing. Four more children (Joseph, Ruth, Deborah, and an unnamed child who apparently died) were born later. William was active in the life of the community, for a time was the representative from Guilford to the General Court.

Jane Dudley died in Guilford on 1 May 1674, and William made his will on 22 December 1676. The daughter Deborah having died, his codecil of 25 July 1683 specified that her portion go to her daughter. William died at Guilford on 5 March 1683.84, his estate being inventoried at 345.03.05
