"Dea. WILLIA]\r DUDLEY ( Williavi^), was called a cordwainer by trade. He was admitted freeman at Guilford, Conn., in 1670, and that year he removed to Saybrook, where he was a Deacon of the Church, and a Representative to the General Court many years, and Commissioner several years.

The town records say: Feb. 7, 1675-6, there were given to Dea. William Dudley, by the town of Saybrook, 32^ rods of up-land as a plot to build his house on at what is now called Old Saybrook, and other pieces of land in that part of the town. See Vol. i. p. 228. The Probate Court at New London, Ct., April 14, 1719, appointed Mrs. Mary Dudley, widow of Mr. William Dudley, administratrix on his estate. Will of Dea. William Dudley : oldest son William to have a double portion, and to have the homestead after decease of his wife. Date of W^ill, Sept. 2, 1700; proved May 29, 1701.

His son William he enjoins to pay his mother, testa- tor's widow, twenty shillings a year, and "if my son Daniel live to enter upon building a house for himself, then my will is that my son William do pay to my son Daniel five pounds in Lawful money of New England." "To my sons Samuel & Joseph, and daughters Eliz. and Mehetabel," other legacies. ... "The children of Dea. William' and his wife Mary (Stow) [SIC: Roe] Dudley were :

William Dudley, b @ Richmond, formerly Sheen, in Surrey, Eng, came to Guilford, CT, from town of Guilford, 30 mi SE of London, in county of Surrey. He d at Guilford, Mar 16 1684. He m Aug 24 1636 Miss Jane Lutman, by Rev Henry Whitfield, rector at Ockley, Surrey, Eng, according to parish register of Ockley. He & wife came to Am & settled in Guilford, CT, in 1639. They came w/Rev Henry Whitfield, as part of Eaton & Hopkins expedition to CT. This company sailed from London May 20 1639. Dudley was mbr of Whitfield's church & parish, & readily joined his clerical friend, in emigration. When arrived w/young wife at Guilford, they established their home on what is now Fair St. There were distinguished men in company w/whom Dudley came to Am, some of whom were Samuel Disborough, who returned to Eng, became Lord Keeper of Great Seal in Scotland, famous MP, etc; John Hoadley, who returned & became eminent clergyman; Thomas Jordan, who returned & became eminent lawyer of Westminster Hall; William Léete, who was Gov of CT. Dudley was representative to gen'l court for Guilford, & held other offices. Dudley was farmer, as appears by his will & inventory. He made his mark on his will, but that does not prove he could not write, as he might have been palsied or lame in his hand, or too ill to write. Wife Jane, d May 1 1674, at Guilford. Children were: William, Joseph, Ruth, Deborah & child whose name is not known.

He was cordwainer by trade, & was admitted freeman at Guilford in 1670, & removed to Saybrook, where he was deacon of church, & rep to gen'l court many yrs, & commissioner several yrs. He m, Nov 4 1661, Mary Roe (some sources say "Stow), who was living in 1702.
