Avatar: A Standard History of Kansas p. 2575 takes the Third Party Statement of Wife and Children: 1. According to James Duncan of Des Moines, Iowa, William Duncan III was born 19 April, 1692 in Northern Ireland.(sic) (Some say he was born on board ship on voyage to the colonies ) He becama a landowner and business man in the colonies. In Green, Culpeper County Wills: Elder WILLIAM DUNCAN - Will of 24 February, 1781, mentions his son, John P. Duncan, deceased (scalped by Indians). Will witnessed by: William Hughes, William Browining and Shadrach Browining - 15 October, 1781.William Duncan of Dumfrieshire settled in Virginia in 1724 and married there Ruth Rawley, a daughter of Matthew Rawley, a Church of England man who came from Wales in 1720. William and Ruth Duncan's children were 1 Margaret Haldane,(sic) 2 Mehitable,(sic) 3 Ruth Elizabeth, (sid) 4 Mary Ann,(sic) 7 Patriot Rawley, 6 William, Jr., 7 Patriot Charles, 8 James (sic) and 9 Townsend (sic). Rawley and Charles served in the command of young George Washington in the British army in the battle which General Braddock lost in 1755 and when Benedict Arnold, as a traitor, led a column of Cornwallis' army into Virginia the brothers responded for the defense of their capital. Although many of these Scotch Presbyterian pioneers were Tories and aided the British against the colonies all of William Duncan's posterity was true to the cause of American liberty.

Nothing is proven on this family prior to 1736 when William Duncan of Hamilton Parish, Prince William Co., VA was deeded 450 acres of land in Orange Co., VA on the Gourdvine Fork. This area became Culpeper Co., VA in 1748 and Rappahannock Co., VA in 1833. Nancy Reba Roy, who wrote a book on this family in 1959 cited information from a Bible record, but nobody who is researching Duncans now seems to know where this Bible is.

Because several "genealogists" who would create family trees to make you related to whoever you wanted to be preyed on the Duncan family in the 1800's, I'm very skeptical of much of the information that is published on the internet. For instance many people will swear up and down and all over the place that William Duncan the Elder's wife's maiden name was Rawley, while citing only these fraudulent genealogies of the 19th century as proof. While they did have a son named Rawley, so did several other people, including another ancestor, Charles Duncan (died in Daviess Co., KY in 1820), who couldn't possibly be a descendant of William Duncan the Elder. A Marshall Duncan, who also lived in Prince William and Culpeper Cos. also had a son named Rawley.

Curator: You will notice that I will merge my tree on almost any line, but not this one. Most of the lines that I could merge with have incorrect information.
