Edmisten, William - entered service 1780 in Amherst County, Virginia, where resided on Headwaters of Pedlar River, as substitute for brother Robert; son of James; moved in 1781 to Lower Creek, Burke County, North Carolina, where he entered service in 1781; returned to Amherst County, Virginia, where he again entered service; moved in 1782 back to Burke County, North Carolina, thence in 1841 to Wilkes County, North Carolina, where he applied for Pension in 1844 age 84; Pension Application rejected, less than 6 months service in a regularly constituted military unit; died 11/21/1847 or 10/14/1848 at home of son John T., Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, North Carolina; children: Susana Blair (resided 1853 in Watauga County, North Carolina), Sally, Robert, Lucy, Emanuel, William, Betsy, Allen, Abraham, Thomas, Suthard, Belinda, & John T.; surname also spelled Edmiston & Edmonson. BIOGRAPHY
Excerpt from Amherst County, Virginia in the Revolution...
William Edmiston served 1 month under Capt... John Jacobs, Col.
Taylor's Regiment, Albemarle Barracks, Virginia. He substituted for his brother,
Robert Edmiston, Oct.. 1, 1780, as a private in Capt. Samuel
Higginbotham's Company.; Joseph Higginbotham Morrison, Lt..
He marched to Richmond and after a tour of 3 months, returned to the home of his
father, James Edmiston, upon the headwaters of the Pedlar River in
Amhurst County, Virginia.
The following March, William emigrated to Lower Creek, Burke County, North Carolina.
On the eight day after his arrival, he was called into service, this time as a
Sargent under Lt. James Blair, Capt.. William Sumpter, Col. Charles Mcdowell's NC.
Regiment. He was discharged September 15, 1781.
September 20th 1781, he went home to Amhurst, VA. William was called
into service in two weeks under Capt.. Richard Ballenger (Bollinger) to go to
Little York. They were ordered to rendezvous at Amhurst C. VA. On the
way there, they met Charles Ison who informed them that Lord
Cornwallis had surrendered. In September 1782, William returned to
Burke County, NC where he lived until about 1841, when he moved to
Wilkes County NC
On March 22, 1853, John T. Edmiston, Wilksboro, Wilkes County, NC
applied for a pension for the heirs of William.
Susannah Blair, Watauga County, NC, Testified that she was a
daughter of William Edmiston, Revolutionary soldier, who died Oct. 21,
1847, at the age of about 88, leaving thirteen children: Susannah
Blair;Salley, Robert, Lucy, Emanuel, William, Betsey, Allen, Abraham,
Thomas, Suthard, Belinda and John T. Edmiston. The application was
rejected for lack of proof of 6 months service.
William never served more than 6 months at a time.
