Rev. War, Three years, Regular Army, 8th. PA Regiment.

In Floyd County, Kentucky in 1810 and 1820.

William served three years under Gen. George Washington. He was

present at Yorktown when Cornwalace made his surrender. William had

fought in the battles of Cow pens and Brandywine. William served under Daniel Boone.

After the war William married Catharine and moved to Montgomery

Co. Kentucky. Later they moved to Floyd Co. Kentucky on Grape

Creek, near Salyerville.

William was an Old Regular Baptist minister and helped to organize

the churches in Floyd Co.

William and his brothers Joseph and Robert came to America ca. 1771 from Ireland and Scotland. They first settled in Westmoreland Co., PA. They moved then to NC and on to KY. While living in PA William enlisted in the Continental Army in August of 1776 and was in the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment, serving 3 years in the Revolutionary War. He fought under George Washington. He had migrated to Floyd Co., KY by 1818 when he filed for a pension. On the 1793 tax list William had no slaves but had several horses and four children. William and Catherine were buried under a favorite tree on their farm overlooking the mouth of Grape Creek in what was then Morgan Co., KY, it is in present day Magoffin Co., KY. Another source does not list William and Mary as children.

FERGUSON, WILLIAM

William Ferguson was born in 1754 Belfast, Ireland and died 1839 Morgan Co. KY, the son of Josiah Ferguson. William married in 1783 to Catherine Lemaster b. 1754 Prince George Co. MD and died in 1842 Morgan Co. KY, dau of Abraham Lemaster and Ann Scott. They first settled in Westmoreland Co. PA then moved to NC and on to KY. While living in Pennsylvania William

served in the Revolutionary War for three years. William and Catherine were said to have been buried under a favorite tree on their farm overlooking the mouth of Grape Creek in present day Magoffin Co. KY. William came to America with his brothers at the age of 16. Fought in the Revolutionary war 1771.

Settled in PA, moved to NC and then to Magoffin Co., Ky in 1800-

Possibly served under Col. Charles Lewis 14th Regiment with battles at Brandywine, Germantown and encamped at Valley Forge winter of 1777-1778

According to a paper dictated by W.W. McGuire about the year 1925. William was a Baptist Minister. (This paper among the Royse papers found at the Oklahoma Historical Society in Ok. City, OK)

William Ferguson of Floyd County in the state of Kentucky who was a private in the regiment commanded by Colonel McCoy of the Pennsylvania line, for the term of three years.

Inscribed on the roll of Kentucky at the rate of 8 dollars per month, to commence on the 20th of May 1818.

Certificate of Pension issued the 23rd of May 1820 and sent to Thomas Triplett, Esq. Owingsville, Kentucky.

Arrears to the 4th of March 1820: $172.12

On the 13th day of September 1824 personally appeared in open court in the county of Morgan the same being a court of record made so by ??? ???. William Ferguson aged 70 years the 11 day of August 1824 resided in Morgan County (formerly Floyd) in said district.

Who first being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows. ???, ??? ??? by Capt. Samuel Miller and commanded by Capt. Clark in the Eighth Pennsylvania Regiment and Second Pennsylvania Brigade and served three years in said company and received his regular discharge ??? from Col. Stephen ??? and from ??? of ??? ??? ??? the ??? and that his original Declaration (^ ??? a ??? ??? the pension ??? ??? ??? ??? ...) leaves ??? ??? ??? day of ??? 1824 and his pension certificate datd the 20 day of May 1820 and ??? Accounting to forty five dollars in all and that I have no children living with me except a son who is a cripple by a fact(?) a horse and unable to assist him in his domestic affairs (^ and of over the age of 21 years) my? wife is in her sixty eight year and very much afflicted with the rheumatic ??? and unable to assist him (^ or his ???) his occupation is that of a common labourer and unable to contribute anything to the support of his family ??? ??? and infirmity (having been struck with the palsy which yet continues). The last schedule was returned for Amendment which I have not a cow in my possession.

I, James P. ???, clerk of the Morgan County Court in the State of Kentucky do hereby certify that the foregoing oath and the schedule thereto ??? are truly copies from the record of the said court and I do further certify that it is the opinion of the said court that the total amounts in value of the property exhibited in the aforesaid schedule is forty five dollars. On testimony I have ??? ??? hereunto let my ??? and affixed my seal there ??? .... this 14th day of September 1824.

A letter, dated 29 February 1932 to Miss Jessie M. Crosby of Kansas City, Missouri, is included in William's pension file. It says that he enlisted in August 1776 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. That he served as a private in Captain Samuel Miller's and Clarke's companies, and in Col. Aenas Mackey and Daniel Brodhead's Pennsylvania regiment. That he was in the battles of Bound Brook, Brandywine, and Germantown, and was discharged in September of 1779.

He was allowed pension on his application executed 20 May 1818 while a resident of Floyd (later Morgan) County, Kentucky. The letter ends saying, "He died August 10, 1839. In 1824, soldier referred to his wife as being sixty-eight years of age, and to a son over twenty-one years of age, no names stated, and there are no further family data on file." the letter is from A.D. Hiller, Assistant to the Administrator. There are a couple of arrows coming off the death date and something scribbled, but I can't make out what. It almost looks like it says "by rupture", but maybe not.
