About William Heinrich Gaede
WM. Gaede Funeral was held Friday at Luthern Church
Interment Was Made at St. John's Cemetery North of Sumner
Funeral services for Wilhelm Gaede, who died at his home in Sumner on February 12, were held at St. John's Lutheran church last Friday afternoon. Burial was made at the Lutheran cemetery North of Sumner.
Wilhelm Gaede was born in West Prussia, Germany, December 4, 1856, and in infancy was consecrated to the triune God by the sacred act of holy baptism. In 1868 he came to America with his parents who at first settled at Palatine, Ill. Here the departed received instruction in the fundamental doctrine of Christian faith and on May 1, 1870, was confirmed by Pastor R. Krueger. Two years later the family moved to Dayton township in Bremer county.
On March 4, 1883, he was united in marriage with Ernestine Pieper. This union was blessed with 9 children, three of which have preceded the father into eternity, *one daughter dying in infancy, Edwin at the age of six years and Elizabeth, **Mrs. John R. Babbitt in 1918.
At first the family lived in Dayton township three years. In 1886 the departed purchased the farm of 80 acres, 2 miles North of Sumner where he lived for 37 years until 1923 when he retired from farming and moved to Sumner.
Since 1887 he has held membership with St. John's Lutheran Congregation. He was a faithful member of the church. Regularly he attended divine services and frequently came to the Lord's table. He sought to be a true follower of his Lord and Savior, he desired to serve Him who first served us, in Whom alone is our salvation. Thus by the grace of God he fought the good fight of faith, and the words apply to him "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee the crown of life."
He was blessed with good health until ten days ago when he began to suffer from an attack of cereberal lesion due to arterial sclerosis. God granted him a painless and peaceful end Wednesday morning at 1:15 o'clock.
His age was 73 years, 2 months and 8 days. His death is mourned by his wife, his 6 children, Herman of Reliance, So. Dak.; Sylvia, Mrs. John Whalen, of Providence, R.I.; August of Sumner; William and Emma of Long Beach, Calif.; and Ernest, pastor at Preston, Minn., one sister, Mrs. Baumgartner of Sumner; 1 brother, Louis Gaede of Tripoli, 7 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Since 1885, Wilhelm Gaede has lived upon his farm of eighty acres on section 12, Sumner township, and in its development has surrounded himself with an enviable degree of prosperity. He was born in Germany, December 4, 1856, and is a son of John Gaede, who emigrated to America in 1868, settling in Cook county, Illinois. Four years later the father moved to Bremer county, Iowa, locating on a farm in Dayton township, where he continued to reside until his death, which occurred when he was seventy-four years of age. His wife, who was in her maidenhood Miss Elizabeth Welbrandt, died in Bremer county at the age of fifty.
Wilhelm Gaede was reared upon his father's farm and when he was still a young man assisted with its operation. In 1883 he bought eighty acres on section 12, Sumner township, and since that time has engaged in general farming upon this place. He has rebuilt all of the buildings and erected a comfortable house, making the property well improved and productive.
In 1883 Mr. Gaede married Miss Ernestine Pipers, a native of Germany and a daughter of Michael Pipers, who came to America when his daughter was nineteen years of age, afterward engaging in farming in LeRoy township, this county, until his death. His wife survives him and makes her home in LeRoy township. Mr. and Mrs. Gaede have become the parents of seven children: Herman, of South Dakota; Silva, of Davenport, Iowa; Elizabeth, the wife of John Babbit; August, at home; William, a traveling salesman with headquarters in Pennsylvania; Emma of Waverly; and Ernest, at home. Mr. Gaede is a member of the Lutheran church and a democrat in his political beliefs. He is recognized as an honest and industrious farmer and he holds the high regard and confidence of all who know him.
