GEDCOM Note
The parents of William Gober, I, are unknown.
It is my personal belief that William Gober, I was not the first Gober to come to what became our America.
This belief is based the reading of many different versions of the first Gober, or Gobers, (that came here), passed down from generation to generation in many of our Gober families.
I descend from William Gober II (1744 NC - 08 April 1826 GA)and his second wife, Lucy Appling (Campbell) Gober (1758 VA - 17 Feb 1826 GA)-to- Richard H. Gober and his first wife, Mary Polly (Ayers) Gober - to - William Jackson M. Gober and Sarah Jane (King) Gober - to - James "Jim" Russell Gober and Mary Nora Elizabeth (Gazaway) Gober - to - Joseph Andrew "Jack" Gober and his first wife, Marietta (Stanfield) Gober Clay - to - Atha Johnny "Tuggie" (Gober) Lewis and Alston Roscoe Lewis, Sr., who were my grandparents. There is no doubt that we descend from this Gober line, as proven by DNA matches.
It was passed down through my Gober line that our earliest Gober ancestor was of German descent and that he came here aboard a ship, which docked off the port or coast of Savannah, Georgia. That while the ship was docked there, he jumped overboard and swam to shore and changed the spelling of his surname. Evidently, he changed his surname due to fear of being found. For what reason, will probably never be known. Could this be the reason for so many different spellings of Gober, such as Gobert, Gobel, Goober, Gobee, Gobey, Gobar, ect.
We do not know what type of ship that this Gober was aboard. It could have been a Merchant ship, or a Military ship.
I do believe that our Gober line was of German Ethnicity.
William Gober, I was the husband of Nancy (Meekin) Gober (16 Apr 1720 England - 12 Dec 1785 Granville, NC). They were married probably abt. 1735 in Virginia.
