"He married Rebecca Sands, daughter of Matthew and Levisa Fields Sands abt 1825....He was a very devout man and was elected Class Leader in the first Methodist Church established in what is now Webster County in 1833. The second general election, after the Civil War, was held October of 1865 in his home. At this election, William was elected sheriff of the county....William Given Gregory fled to Upshur County during Civil War."
