William was born around 1690, probably in Holland. He spoke Dutch and English fluently and, like his father, worked as a seaman out of Dutch and English ports.
William "Chicken Bill" acquired his nickname while living in England when he and two friends, who had been drinking, stole 31 ducks and chickens. After selling the fowl they were caught and found guilty. Their sentence was "transportation" meaning deportation out of the country. William was transported to America in 1731 aboard the ship named Forward. He most likely then had to spend some time as an indentured servant to repay the person who secured his passage.
William met and married Anne Turner Dillon (Dillon Turner?) in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, VA (m. May 21, 1738). Anne may also have been indentured as well as previously married/widowed. She was born in Ireland and came to America around 1728.
William and Anne appear to have settled on a farm in Winchester, VA before moving on to West Virginia in an area later to be known as Hacker's Creek. They were the parents of two sons, William and John, along with three daughters, Elizabeth, Nancy Ann and Mary (Polly).
