About William Harrell, Sr.

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA (Soldier). DAR Ancestor #: A212731

LITTLE WALKER'S CREEK, A HISTORY OF THE LAND AND IT'S PEOPLE, Rebecca Cox Sowers, page 120: " William HARRELL was born abt. 1740 in Frederick County, Virginia, and died 13 Aug 1822 in Wythe County, Virginia. He married Martha. She was born about 1750 in Frederick County, Virginia. The family located in Evensham (now Wytheville), Wythe County Virginia in the 1820 census pg 215. In 1784 there was land grant of 267 acres adjoining Alford's land on Harmony Creek--granted to William HARRELL. This places William in Wythe County, Virginia by 1784." NOTE:

Wythe County, Virginia was not formed until 1790. Wythe County was formed from Montgomery County, VA

William Harrell b. 1740-55 of Wythe County, Virginia served in Captain Bowman's company during the Revolutionary War. This company was not a part of the regular Continential Army but was a Virginia militia unit and therefore William does not appear in the pension applications. His brother Reuben served with him and they participated in Colonel George Roger Clark's campaign into the northwest territories. Reuben also served in the 8th Virginia Regiment of Foot during the battle of Brandywine. I believe, but can't prove that Captain Bowman's company was also attached to the 8th Regiment during this battle. A roster of Capt. Joseph Bowman's company lists John Harrell, Rubin Harrell, and William Harrell. This is an important source document as it places William Harrell in Northern Virginia well prior to his death in Wythe County, VA in 1822. The company was recruited in Dunmore County, which later became Shenandoah County, VA. Source: Garland Lively

(Not sure which William Harrell this is. HB)

This land would not be part of the Richard Harrell Sr. land because it is located between the two Shenandoah Rivers.. It appears that all of Richard

sr.'s land was on the South side of the South Shenandoah River.. It appears to me that this is a land grant obtained from Fairfax by William Harrell and Assigned by William to Henry Cane in 1780 or before.. This could be William of Wythe, s/o Jacob... selling his land before moving to New River.. Notice that Williams' wife Susannah is not mentioned on this land assignment.. Also, since this transaction does not mention any money involved, it could be a surveyors record for Henry Cane when he had the land surveyed in 1780.. The state of Va. had a lot of land grants, warrants, claims surveyed in 1780.. James Harreld of Washington co., Va. had settled on land in 1769 but did not get a survey until 1780.. GLH 8/17/2008
