About William Hatcher, Jr.

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hatcher-353

William Hatcher born about 1636, according to http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/HATCHER/2012-04/13344... William Hatcher, Jr. (1639-1667) he was never married

The above assertion is WRONG!

DNA evidence proves that the living direct male line descendants of Susannah, the wife of Thomas Burton, Sr., have Hatcher DNA. This is best explained if this William Hatcher is the father and Susannah is his widow. See Susannah's profile for the full details.

Accordingly, William Hatcher, Jr. married Susannah LNU and had five children (who were renamed by Susannah's second husband to be) Thomas Burton, Jr., Anne Burton, John Burton, Isaac Burton, and Abraham Burton.[1]

The children of this family are all surnamed Burton because of the marriage of the widow Susannah Hatcher to Thomas Burton, Sr. The surviving male lines (descending from John and Abraham) all carry Hatcher Y DNA.

Notes

There is now a paragraph on the page for William's wife, Susannah, stating the reason for the current date of birth ("about 1638"): "On February 1, 1661/2, William Hatcher, Jr. and his younger brother Henry (again, named in that order in the deed) acquired a 200-acre parcel of land on the north bank of the James River at Varina. At least one brother would have needed to be at least 21 years of age to make that transaction happen. So, as the older brother, William, Jr. would have needed to be born before 1 Feb 1640/1 to be at least age 21 on the date of that deed. The best view of these facts is that William, Jr., was born sometime around 1637. The most likely birth order is William, Jr. (about 1637), Edward (about 1638), Jane (about 1640), Henry (about 1642), and Benjamin (about 1643). Susannah, born about 1640 and now attributed as the wife of William, Jr., no longer needs to be wedged into those other 5 kids born over a timeframe of 6 years. Susannah likely married William, Jr. in about 1660, again arguing that William, Jr. must have been born by 1639. The likely dates of birth for the children are Thomas Burton, Jr., about 1661; Anne Burton, 8 Aug 1663 (per Stovall research); “Old John” Burton, about 1665; Isaac Burton, about 1667; and Abraham Burton, on or after 1 Oct 1668. On 1 Oct 1692 Abraham deposes in court that he is “aged about 23 years” thus born no later than 30 Sep 1669. It is also possible that Abraham was older than age 23 for his 1692 deposition (people were frequently older than what they stated in a deposition)."

Valentine Papers (Virginia), Vol. 1-4, 1864-1908

Nathaniel Bacon Esq. decd. of Curles in Henrico Parish and Co. Thos. Jarvis, of Kignotang, Elizabeth City Co., Gent. who married the Relict of and is Trustee of the estate of said Bacon. deed from Edward Hatcher. Consideration 1100 pds. of Tobacco paid by said Bacon decd. to sd. Hatcher. 50 acres in Varina adjoining land formerly belonging to the widow Parker, now in possession of Wm. Byrd, Esq. and is part of a dividend of 200 acres formerly belonging to William Dawkes, being purchased of Robert Bullington and Henry Rowing and Alice, his wife, by Wm. Hatcher Jr. and Henry Hatcher by two conveyances Feb. 1, 1661, and conveyed by Henry Hatcher to Edward Hatcher Aug. 20, 1667. Mary, wife of said Edward Hatcher, relinquishes her dower. Recorded-April 1, 1694.

The date of August 20, 1667 was likely copied wrong when the above deed was created in 1694, about 17 years later. The most likely actual date for the conveyance from Henry to Edward after the death of William, Jr. is 20 Aug 1669, substituting a "7" for the "9" in the 1694 copy. If this is not true, then the youngest son, Abraham Burton, was born earlier than is currently thought so as to still be conceived by William before his death. Abraham's direct male line descendants have Hatcher DNA.
