From British Newspaper Archive: Truth Wednesday, 23 October 1912 Page 5

Mr. W. H. Hill, who died last week, was the head of a family which has been closely connected with Glasgow for four hundred years, and he could trace his descent clearly to James Hill, who was "exhorter and minister" at Cathcart early in the sixteenth century. Members of the family have been prominent citizens ever since Ninian Hill (grandson of the aforesaid James) married the sister and co-heiress of George Hutcheson, one of the founders of Hutcheson's Hospital.

The father of the late Mr. Hill was an active railway pioneer in the West of Scotland, to which he added a considerable reputation as an accomplished classical scholar.

Mr. W. H. Hill himself was one of the leading writers (i.e., solicitors) of Glasgow, and he held many important public offices. He was at the same time distinguished as an antiquary and a historian. He wrote several very interesting books containing a great deal of curious information, and possessed a valuable library.
