About William Hoggatt
William Hoggatt was born about 1727. He was the son of Philip Hoggatt and Mary Glendenning. Most researchers give his birthplace as Pennsylvania, but some believe that he was born in Virginia. William Hoggatt was received by request at the Quaker Camp Creek Monthly Meeting, Louisa County, Virginia on the 19th day, 12th month, 1747/48 (19 February 1747/48).
At some point, the spelling of his name became Hockett and some of his descendants used that spelling of the name.
William Hockett married Hannah Beals, daughter of John Beals and Margaret Hunt, before 30 May 1760 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Their marriage was reported to the New Garden Monthly Meeting, Rowan County (now Guilford), North Carolina the 30th day, 5th month, 1760.
William died between September 1771 and April 1772 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He was originally buried in an unmarked grave, with a stone added later by his family. His family used the 1772 date on the stone, which bears an inscription of "First Settler."
