At the time of his death there was an article in the Weekly Free Press dated 1905.04.08 which I quote below.

“A well-known townsman in the person of Mr William Lawrence, senior, died at his residence in Woodley Street last Saturday evening. Deceased had been suffering with pneumonia for about a fortnight, and a few days before his death began to improve in health, it being thought that he was in a fair way to recovery. During the course of Saturday evening, however, he suddenly became worse, relapsing into unconsciousness, and passed away peacefully shortly after 10 o’clock, an apoplectic seizure being the immediate cause of death. Mr Lawrence was one of the early settlers in South Africa, and was highly esteemed and respected by the citizens of Kimberley, who turned out in large numbers to the funeral on Monday afternoon, the arrangements for which were carried out by Mr R Bodley. He took a keen interest in local affairs, serving on their Borough Council for several years, and being an energetic member of the Scottish Association, Imperial Union, Presbyterian Church, Bowling Green, Athole Lodge of Freemasons etc. Mr Lawrence was proprietor of the Shilling Mineral Water Factory, and died at the age of 69 years. The Rev W H Richards will refer to the deceased’s life at a memorial service to be held in the Kimberley Presbyterian Church to-morrow (Sunday) morning.”
