William Ledford came to America with his brothers Henry and John on the ship Wapoole with Captain James Patton. William married Elizabeth before 1745 in Virginia. They had a total of twelve children. They left Virginia and settled first in Rowan County, NC and then on to Randolph County, NC.

In Nov 1746, the Augusta County Court designated two roads through the Roanoke Valley to be worked by the residents. Among those named are "all the Leadfords". 2-3 Jan 1753, bought 90 acres from James Patton for 5 pounds. Deed described oak and walnut trees on a hillside above the west fork of the Roanoke River with lower level land on both sides of Bradshaw's Creek. 2 Jan 1764, William Ledford, Planter purchased 330 acres from Walter and Margaret Thornbrough for 28 pounds. This land was located on both sides of Abbotts Creek and included all houses, buildings, orchards, gardens, watercourses, etc. This land had been granted to Thornbrough in 1762 by the Earl of Granville. In the name of God Amen! I William Ledford of the State of North Carolina and Rowan County Being very sick and weak in body but in perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God Calling unto mind the mortality of my body and Knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my Last Will And Testament that is to say principally and First of all I give and Recommend my soul unto The hand of Almighty God that gave it and my Body I Recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors, Nothing doubting but at the general Resurection I shall Receive the same again by the Mightly power of God and as touching such Wordly estate wherewith it has pleased God to Bless me in this Life, I give devise and dispose of The same in the following manner and form - First I give and bequeath to Elizabeth my Dearly beloved wife one Negro girl named Juda one sorrel mare and Two small feather beds and beding and one Hundred pounds to be raised and Levied out of My estateand her saddle and also I give to my Daughter Sary Spoolman twenty five pounds to be Raised and Levied out of my estate and I give and bequeath to my son John Ledford one part or parcel of Land Lying on both sides of the Ready branch joining a line I pasifyed in a bond I give to Jacob Tice and joining John McCurry Line and John Andersons Line to Run from said Ready branch east twenty rods along said Line I pasifyed in a bond I give to Jacob Tice then Running a strate line between my son John Ledford and my son Squire Ledford I give and bequeath to my daughter Phebe simmons one part of parcel of Land Lying Joining Phillip Klinarts Line and James Ross Line and Jacob Tices Line. When this sum of money is Raised and taken out of their parts above mentioned then my son John Ledford to pay twenty pounds to my son Squire Ledford and twenty pounds to my daughter Phebe Simmons and ten pounds to my daughter in law Grizzaluh Ledford. The said Negro girl I left to Elizabeth Ledford my Wife named Juda, at her marriage or decease to be sold and equally divided between my son John Ledford and my son Squire Ledford and also my daughter Phebe Simmons. And Elizabeth Ledford my wife I give the dresser and all the dishes on it and two little pots one dutch oven one pot rack and the corn containing. The hemp ground one little bay mare called Hernd and the linnen and two hogs. John Ledford my son I leave Executor Whom I likewise Constitute Make and ordain the sole executor of this My Last Will and Testament all and singular, Lands, Negroes, goods and chattles by them freely to Be possessed and enjoyed and I do hereby utterly Disallow, Revoke, and Disannull all and every other former Teastaments Wills Legacies bequests and executors by me in Ways before Named Willed and Bequeathed Ratifying and Confirming this and No other to be my Last Will and testament in witness Whereof I have Hereunto Set my hand seal this 2nd Day of June in the year of our Lord 1796- - - Signed sealed published pronounced- - - And declared by the said William Ledford As his last will and testament William [L] Ledford his mark
