William George Lewis (1925 - 2002)

Brief overview:

William (76), and his wife, Albertina Lewis (74), were attacked in their home while they were sleeping, in their farmhouse outside outside Verena, Witbank on 21st September 2002. William was stabbed to death, Albertina was shot dead while she was sleeping.

The suspects gained entry through this window, which the couple left open for their cat. The attackers apparently killed the couple's dog before they attacked the couple. Their bodies were found by farm workers when they reported for duty this morning.

The couple had lived on the farm since 1985.

Bruce (38), the couple's son had visited his parents the night before. The following morning, neighbour, Robin de Witt, called Bruce to tell him that his parent's had been killed.

"I can't understand why they can't just take what they want and walk. Why is it necessary to kill two old people? Is it anger or is it revenge?" So asked Bruce. Daughter, Margaret, said her parents were an easy target because they were so isolated.

The killers fled with the couples' handgun.

Police launched a manhunt, but as yet no arrests have been made. Malcolm Mokomene, police spokesperson, says: "According to the investigation that we are conducting, the motive might have been robbery, but everything is possible. We are going to leave no stone unturned to see to it that the right information surfaces."
