William Ligon was born about 1737 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. His parents were Henry Ligon and Sarah Ligon. He died circa 1788 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, United States.

William married Edith Ligon on November 14, 1759, in Prince Edward Co, VA. Together they had the following children:
