Foreign Merchant
In 1791 he was a member of the Merchants House, Glasgow, and for a time he was Comptroller of Customs at Greenock. He completed the disposal of the caput baroniae in Wigtownshire, begun by his uncle in 1807, between several purchasers, when the estates of Barr and Garpel in Renfrewshire became the substitute barony of Garthland and Garthland house was built in 1811 [The Peerage] http://www.thepeerage.com/p45554.htm#i455539
