About William Manuel

William was born on the 5th November, 1849 in Paterson, Uralla, NSW., Australia. He was baptised on the 17th February, 1850 at St. Paul's Church of England, Paterson. He died on the 18th September, 1926 at Emmaville aged 76, and is buried in the Church of England Cemetery, Emmaville.

On the 1st January, 1878 he married Sarah Louisa Berry at the Church of England in Uralla. Sarah is the daughter of Jocob George Berry and Louisa Grevell.

William and Sarah had 12 children, they are as follows:

1. Frederick William born 19/06/1879 in Salisbury, Uralla, NSW., and died 27/07/1970 in Singleton, NSW aged 91. He married Elizabeth Bone Holloway (b 22/11/1878 in Gostwyck, NSW, daughter of George Holloway and died in 1962) in Quirindi on hte 01/11/1905. They had 5 children: Raymond, Gordon, Eleanor aka Nellie, Joyce and Leila.

Frederick appears to have been a multi-talented man. After his marriage he drove a coach and four carrying mail and passengers between Tamworth and Weabonga. He studied wool classing, invented his own milk teasting apparatus, patented a treatment for worms in sheep ad was ofter called upon to do veterinary work. On the academic side, Fred studied history, maths, astrology, geology and philosophy. He wrote verse, painted and reported on the local affairs for the Maitland Mercury.

2. Emily Maud born 13/04/1881 in Walcha, NSW. She died on 24/06/1951 in Emmaville and never married.

3. Francis Garnet Samuel born 26/08/1882 in Uralla, NSW, died 15/05/1963 in Emmaville aged 80. He married Lillian Chandler daughter of Thomas Chandler & Selina Brown, and had one son, Thomas ( b 08/09/1922 in Emmaville, NSW.

Francis began his business life with a haulage waggon. He bought a new device, a threshing machine, which was a success. He sold this and began sawmilling in the Nundle/Hanging Rock area, which he also sold. With his brothers, Harold and Fred, he pruchased 12,000 acres between Nundle and Walcha. This partnership was dissolved and Frank selected land he named, "Taranga", joining Strathbogie and Emmaville. This property was eventually bought by his son, Tom.

4. Henry Harold was born 30/06/1884 at Walcha, NSW., and died 18/06/1961 in Gosford. He married Aileen Mary Cussen in Emmaville on the 6th January, 1921. They had one daughter, Alisa Patricia born 18th Septmeber, 1921 at Inverell, NSW.

5. Herbert George born 10/10/1885 in Walcha, NSW., and died 21/11/1975 in Coffs Harbour, NSW aged 90. On the 28th June, 1913, he married Amy Ann Mason (b 21/12/? and died 16/01/1934). They had 2 children: George and Douglas.

6 Sarah Louisa born 03/02/1887 in Tamworth, NSW and died 28/01/1921 in Tallangatta, Victoria, Australia aged 34). She married Edward James Brown,(b 12/01/1883), son of Edward on the 27th March,1912 at Mosman, and had one son, Edward James.

7. Ernest Norman born 15/08/1889 and died 19/07/1904 aged 14.

8. Charles John born 11/12/1890 and died January, 1974 in Uki aged 83. He married Amy Sobraon Petty, (05/12/1884 on the ship, "Sobraon"), about 1920 in Sydney, NSW. They had 3 children: Harold, Wilfred and twin brother Keith.

9. Eveline May born 27/01/1893 and died 03/03/1971 at Coffs Harbour aged 74. On the 12th August, 1916, Eveline married Bertram Haworth in Tamworth, NSW, and they had 4 children: Selby, May, Bettie.

10. Selby Masterman born 07/07/1894 in Walcha, NSW.,and died 25/09/1973 in Emmaville, NSW. He married Joyce Beryl Lowrey (b 11/09/1926), on the 18th September, 1926 at Inverell. Selby and Joyce had 5 children, (Twins) William and Selby, Olivia, Martha and John.

11. Thomas Allen aka Allen was born 13/08/1897 in Blenheim, NSW, and died 13/04/1982 in Coffs Harbour aged 84. He married Bertha Woolfrey, (b 18/12/1894 and died 01/07/1976 in Surfers Paradise, Queensland), daughter of Edwin & Clara Woolfrey, in Tamworth on the 30th August, 1922. Thomas and Bertha had 3 children: Ernest, Leonard and Gwen.

12. Marion born 26/06/1901 in Walcha, NSW. She married Reginald Marcus, (b 29/081894 and died 03/02/1974), at Glen Innes on the 4th July, 1923. They had 3 children: Dawn, Marjorie and Rosemary.

In 1867, William purchased land at Salisbury, developing a large business supplying farm produce to Cobb & Co. He sold out when the railway reached Uralla in 1885 and moved to the Walcha district.

In January, 1894, he moved to "Weabonga", Tamworth, where he was among the first to take up large areas of rough, mountainous country.

He hauled his wool to Port Macquarie for shipment to Sydney and returned with stores.

A versatile man, William could read and write, developed strains of wheat suited to the Tablelands, was a good public speaker with a keen interest in public matters and something of a consultant to his fellows.

After retirement he spent hsi latter years at Emmaville.

His wife, Sarah, is reputed to havehelped her brother, George, break in horses.
