About William Martin, of Floyd County
SAR record 168165, This is not the same person as Col. William Lucas Martin, husband of Frances Farris and son of Brig. General Joseph Martin.
William Martin was credited with Patriotic Service in Bedford Co., VA. Deed Book 7343, Bedford Co., VA, marriage of Susannah Meador and William Martin is recorded in Bedford Co., VA in 1783: Furnished Beef to the troops in Abercrombie & Slatten, VA; REVOLUTIONARY Public Claims, Vol. 1, Page 102. SAR status is: Patriotic Service.
William Martin, parents unknown, was born mid-1760's in Virginia. He married Susannah Meador (some say Tudor). They had at least one child, a daughter named Millie Martin, born 1790 in Russell County, Virginia. William died in Floyd County, Kentucky.
One researcher has suggested that this William Martin may have been the son of David Martin, Sr, born in 1735 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia, and Susanna Robards (or Roberts), born in 1738, also from St. Peters Parish, New Kent County, VA. [see the discussion here - http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/MARTIN/2009-03/123783...]. The researcher bases his theory on DNA, on common names, and on old maps showing neighbors on land titles.
David and Susannah Martin had a known son named William, born 1765 in Bedford County, Virginia and died in Floyd County, Kentucky. He married Ann Green in Bedford County. He lived in Russell County for ten years, approximately 1790-1800, serving as Justice of the Peace. The Bedford County Martins were near neighbors of the Bedford County Meadors.
This is an interesting theory, but there is not enough proof yet to accept David and Susannah as the parents of this William Martin.
