When researching William Neat, arriving in South Africa circa 1820 care needs to be taken because there are 3 individuals called William Neat mentioned in The 1820 Settler Correspondence as preserved in the National Archives, Kew and edited by Sue Mackay, which is on the eGGSA site.
Firstly in the HYMAN, Charles, 1820 Settler (http://www.eggsa.org/1820-settlers/index.php/h-menu/664-2011-01-09-...) documentation there were 2 William Neats listed
1. Wm NEAT, occupation: labourer,24, Wife: Elizabeth Neate 1 child two years old who was listed as having declined to travel on account of sickness or family affairs. One of the people nominated to replace those who had declined to travel was: 2. William NEAT, 22, occupation: labourer, Wife: Susan age 23, Daughter: Jane age 2[?] was one of the people nominated to replace those who had declined to travel. (William Neat, SV/PROG) On the 1820 Settlers web site, this William Neat is listed in the Hyman party The third William Neat mentioned was in the BOURNE, Stephen lists (http://www.eggsa.org/1820-settlers/index.php/pre-1820-letters/b-men...) 3. William NEAT, 23, occupation: Shearman, Wife: Rhoda NEAT age 20 Daughter: Eliza NEAT age 3. (William Neat, SV/PROG) Although William Neat’s name appears in red in this document, indicating he was an 1820 settler, he does not appear in the 1820 Settlers list (http://1820settlers.com/documents/settlerletters/B/BOURNE_Stephen.htm) and information received from the 1820 Settlers Museum, Grahamstown indicated he was not an 1820 Settler.

Please note the South African Settler (http://www.southafricansettlers.com/?p=1290) has the second and third William Neat, above, listed as one person.
