"The Norris Family" is an amazing work in Genealogy, 1500 pages in four volumes. Only three copies were produced, and one is located in the Rare Books Section of the Library of Congress. Another is to be in the Kansas DAR Library at dodge city, Ks. "He migrated to Lancaster co., Va. where his cousin Martha Norris was residing in the early 1680's & there married Martha, daughter of Thomas Husband, born circa 1659 in Va. There appears to be considerable misinformation concerning Martha Norris of Lancaster co., Va. owing to the fact, not generally known, that there were two of this contemporary. One branch of the family who made some searches selected one deed (Lib. 7 fol. 37) & assumed that Martha of this deed was widow of Thomas Norris mentioned in the deed, & that they were the progenitors of the Norris family of Lancaster co. Another source of misinformation came from a party not connected with nor interested in the Norris family but who made searches of the records & stated that "Martha was a daughter of George Wale" quoting Order Book 1685. We carefully examined this book of some 250 pages & no index & failed to find anything to substantiate the statement. We later interviewed the party who made the written statement, he resides in Lancaster, Va., he did not recall making the statement & did not have any copies of anything he may have written. He did, however, search this book in our presence & failed to find anything to verify what he had written. There was found in May term of Court 1685, page 202, "Order to William Morris who married one of the daughters of Mr. George Wale (descd.)" This is no doubt what he based his statement upon. William Norris was a blacksmith & settled in Lancaster after his marriage. Martha appears to have inherited land from her father. There does not appear any record of William Norris purchasing or disposing of any real estate. In minutes of a Court 12 Nov. 1684; this Court orders paid to Martha Norris for attending a Court at James City as a witness for the State vs. Edward husband late of this county, for eight days with two days going & two days returning, a total of twelve days, same to be against the estate of Thomas Husband, etc. It further appears that sd. Martha Norris paid expenses of an additional witness & it is ordered to be reimbursed this amount, etc. In minutes of a court May 1685: One Thomas Shilling, servant to Mrs. Martha Norris, did appear in this Court & acknowledge he was freely willing to serve sd mistress for six years; which is recorded. On 5 Feb. 1689 Martha Norris deeded to Edward Herbert & Thomas Pursell 150 acres of land in Lancester co. for 12,000 pounds ot tobacco (Deeds Lib 7 fol. 24. On 13 Nov. 1695 Martha Deeded to Robert Carter a small parcel of land in Lancaster co. (Deeds Lib. 7 fol. 106). Martha died shortly after the birth of her daughter, Martha, & William married 2nd. the widow of Edward Brown. Her name, given or maiden, is not disclosed in the records. William died abt May 1715. On 14 March 1715 William Norris (son) appeared before the Court made oath that "William Norris, his father, decsd departed this life without making any will soe farr as he knows" & asked letters of administration; Jno. Stonam, Henry Stonam, Thos. Chattin & J. David were appointed to inventory & appraise said effects; sd. William Norris in a rule of this Court was sworn & cautioned "not to meddle with any estate of Edward Brown, dcsd, his father dyed possessed of, the late wife of ye sd Brown, since widow of sd. Norris." permission for administration hereon (Ct. Rec. Lib. 6 fol. 124). On 11 Apr. 1716 Minutes of the Court exhibit inventory of sd William Norris, descd (Lib. 6 fol. 134). His widow does not appear in any subsequent record. No mention of Edward Brown in wills or administrations in Lancaster co. There is not record of any children by the second marriage."
