Perkins (and others?) is 1.5 miles west of the courthouse, 2.8 miles north on Route #56, 0.6 miles west (left). This land was granted to this William Perkins by King JAMES II in 1746.

William Perkins, Senior of Buckingham County furnished provision for the army during the Revolutionary War (page 4, 31 in Buckingham County Court booklet); and as a result of this patriotic service his descendants are eliglble for memberhsip in DAR and SAR.

"WILLIAM PERKINS was probably born 1722 in Henrico Co., Va. It has been claimed that he was born in 1708, but this seems quite early and another record states he was born just 18 years before the birth of his son William Perkins (born 1740). There is no documentary proof of his birth. He died about 1800 in Buckingham Co., Va. The Buckingham County records have been destroyed. However the tax records show that he paid personal taxes in 1800 and that his real estate taxes from 1800 to 1813 are on his estate. He married Lucy Watkins (daughter of John Watkins of Henrico Co., Va.).

The W. R. Perkins papers in the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond quote an interview with Mrs. William A. Horseley (Eliza George Perkins #3341-34) who died in 1907. She was a great granddaughter of this William Perkins and she stated that he was the son of Constantine Perkins. Constantine Perkins mentions "my Beloved son William Perkins" in his deed of May 19, 1761. That his wife was Lucy is shown by the Albemarle deed of 1759. That she was the Lucy Perkins mentioned in the will of John Watkins, written July 28, 1743, and proved May 1744 in Henrico Co., Va., is indicated by the fact that she named a son John Watkins Perkins. (The W. R. Perkins papers quote a list of tithables for 1773 in Buckingham County on which the names William Perkins, John Watkins Perkins, and William Perkins, Jr. appear.)

Although born in Henrico County and probably married there, William Perkins moved with his family to Goochland County and in 1759 he and William Lewis were appointed processioners for St. James Northam Parish. Prior to that--in 1747--William Perkins patented 400 acres of land on a branch of Taylor's Creek of Slate River in that part of Albemarle County which became Buckingham County in 1761. The land adjoined that of Arthur McDaniel. The patent granted him all the woods, underwoods, swamps, marshes, low grounds, meadows, and feedings as well as the privileges of hunting, hawking, fishing, and fowling. In return he was to pay a fee rent of 1 shilling for each 50 acres payable on the Feast of Saint Michale the Archangel. The patent was signed by William Gooch, Aug. 20, 1747.

This was the same tract of land which William Perkins deeded to David Davison "both of Albemarle County" in consideration of 50 pounds current money of Virginia in a deed dated Mar. 3, 1759, and recorded in Albemarle July 12, 1759. Lucy, wife of the said William Perkins, relinquished her dower. The deed was witnessed by Charles May, John Benning and William Webb. Probably he was the same William Perkins who bought 885 3/4 acres in Albemarle County in 1767 from THomas and Rebecca Terrell and sold 785 acres in Albemarle County to Reuben Terrell in 1768. In 1772 Tandy Ford sold 100 acres in Albemarle County to William Perkins.

On Aug. 20, 1747, he also patented another tract of 387 acres on Slate River in Albemarle County adjoining the land of David Griffith. The conditions were much the same as in the patent for the 400 acre tract. The 387 acre tract became the home of William Perkins and it lay in the new county of Buckingham when the latter was formed in 1761. He paid taxes on this land from 1782 up until his death and it was then carried on the books as "Estate of William Perkins" until 1813. The acreage varied--387, 357, 350--possibly the result of a sale or more likely as a result of a new survey. At his death the land appears to have been left as a life estate to Mrs. Constance Blakey, wife of William Blakey. At her death the estate went to John Watkins Perkins, who had died in 1803. The executors of John Perkins' estate conveyed the 350 acre tract in 1820 to Arthur Moseley who had married Sarah Perkins (niece of John Perkins). The land was given to Marcia Louise Moseley (daughter of Arthur Moseley and Sarah Perkins), who married Col. Thomas Moseley Bondurant. Here they built a home, "Perry Hill," named after the hero of the War of 1812. This land has continued in the possession of descendants....

..... In the Buckingham County tax records William Perkins is listed as William Perkins, Sr., in the years 1782, 1787, and 1788, but not 1788. William Perkins paid personal taxes in 1800 on 4 slaves and 5 horses, but from 1800 to 1813 his holdings are listed as his estate.

If William Perkins left a will, it was lost when the Buckingham County records were destroyed. It is not possible, therefore, to be certain how many children he had. However the tax records and other evidence indicate that William Perkins and Lucy Watkins had issue (at least)....." Children listed are William Perkins, John Watkins Perkins, Constance Perkins who married William Blakey.
