Grave is first one left of William Irwin Mustin or two right of Agnes Farquer Irwin. Date of death is interment. He married Mary Lee Mahon daughter of Dr. David Nelson Mahon of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. William and Mary lived in Carlisle and were the parents of five children. Youngest daughter Frances Neill Rose married Col. James Walker Benet (both buried at Arlington National Cemetery). The Benets would visit Carlisle with their children Laura, William Rose and Stephen Vincent. Mary's other children included Elizabeth Neill Mahon Rose, Agnes Mary Rose, William John Rose, and David Mahon Rose. The son of William John Rose, Lt. Colonel William Watts Rose is also buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
William studied at Western University (now known as the University of Pittsburgh) and then at Heidelberg University in Germany. He was a linguist and was associated with the U.S. State Department. At the outbreak of the Civil War his family relocated from DC to Pittsburgh for the duration.
In 1864 the family relocated to Philadelphia along with William's mother Agnes Irwin (Rose) Mahon..
