Willim or William SIMS, Judith, VA Line R9611, Rev Sol lived in Hanover Co VA during the Rev. & he m there to Judith CROSS (M license dated 9 Aug 1773), soldier d in Maury Co TN in 1815 & his widow d there 10 Jun 1841, in 1856 the only surviving child was Susan McAlister of Washington Co TN, on 18 Apr 1857 in Maury Co TN one Augustus SIMS (as he signed) but did not state a relationship to soldier.

Colonel SIMS commanded a regiment in the Rev. War. He m Judith CROSS 20 July 1806. ( all his ch were born between 1774-1795) (From Judge O.E. Dunlap, Waxahachie, TX. by R. B. Reeves, labled for Maury Co Historical Assoc.) Marriage date is incorrect according to Pension Files stated above.

Year: 1810; Census Place: Culpeper, Culpeper, Virginia; Roll: 68; Page: 114; Image: 00226; Family History Library Film: 0181428 In the book entitled "Let the Drums Roll" it stated that William was a tall and fine-looking man, a soldier in the American Army during the Revolutionary War. At one time he and Kit, his slave, were captured by the Red Coats; and for the amusement of the British soldiers, they were compelled to march around the campfire. Kit followed his master, beating a drum, which was much to the mortification and chagrin of the prisoners.
William married Judith Cross on August 9, 1773, and was the father of nine daughters and three sons. The daughters spun, wove, and made by hand all clothing for the family and for the slaves, the house linen, and linen underwear for their wedding outfits. Each of William's daughters was married in white satin, white stockings, and white slippers.
Copy of letter from Mrs. Viola Hunt, Waxahachie, Texas to Mrs. Victoria Lewis of 1225 12th St. S., Birmingham, Alabama. 30 December 1900: The letter basically states the following: "Our great grandfather, William Sims was a Colonel in the American army during the Revolutionary War. He lived at the old homestead in Hanover Co., near Richmond, until their 12 children reached maturity or thereabouts. He moved westward in 1807, stopping one year in East Tennessee, thence to Maury Co., Tennessee, at which place he settled in 1808 and died in 1814, four miles from Mt. Pleasant, and buried at the family graveyard set apart by him on his own estate."
If this is so, his wife, Judith, is also more than likely buried on the property as well as their son, Thomas and daughter-in-law Mary Ann Winn. (Who both died before Judith Sims, Williams's widow. Mary Ann died in 1818 and Thomas in 1838.) Thomas and Mary Ann had Grandchildren who married each other, Thomas H. Sims and Harriet Lee, who lost a little boy in 1864, during the height of the Civil War. In a letter to her husband, it states that their little son, Grey, who drowned, was buried under the sugar tree next to his grandmother. (They both had the same grandmother, Mary Ann Winn.)The Civil War letter also states that their son is buried next to his aunt. Harriet Lee and Thomas H. both lost an aunt, Evaline L. Sims, the same year as their son drowned. Quite a story, but there is a very large sugar tree on the property where all of the gravestones are currently there to this day.
