About William Peregoy Smith
William Peregoy Smith was a Union standard bearer in the battle Battle of Fisher Hill, and lost his leg ... in battle
William P. Smith was born Sept. 20, 1803, in Huntingdon county, Pa., and died May 15, 1890, at the residence of John Miller, of Stock township, aged 86 years, 7 months and 25 days, and was buried in the Pleasant Valley cemetery, in sight of his old homestead where he passed the greater part of his life. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. R.S. Strahl. James Hines, Will D. Miller, Frank W. Smith, Dell F. Smith, Harry Johnston and Will J. Smith, his grandsons, representing six different families, acted as pall-bearers. He moved from Pennsylvania to Bloomfield, O., with his parents, in 1818, and three years later moved to the farm now owned by his brother Jno. P. Smith. In 1824 he entered the farm on which he lived all his married life and is now owned by Campbell Buxton, his grandson-in-law. On August 31, 1826, he was married to Margaret Parker. By this union, eleven children were born, two of which died in infancy and one, David, a Union soldier, died in the south during the civil war. Those living are James P., Simeon, Richard P., Daniel and Mrs. John Miller, of Stock township; Mrs. Jos. E. Johnston, of Monroe township; Mrs. David Hines, of near Dennison O., and Mrs. Geo. W. Spiker, of Emporia Kansas. There are forty-two grandchildren, making seventy-nine descendants living. He joined the Methodist Church, over sixty years ago, and was converted in 1841, at the old Wright Church, on the farm now owned by John W. McDigitt, soon after its erection. He was the last of the old members who founded the church. He was always attentive, to his church duties, and when in good health he was most invariably found in his place in church on Sabbath. His wife died in 1870, and since that time he has been living among his children, making his home at John Miller’s, his son-in-law. In the prime of his life he was a good farmer, an active citizen and an honest neighbor, on whom every one could rely. But for the past few years he has taken but little part in the affairs of this world. He has passed to rest, and his memory will be cherished by his children and all who knew him. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/48402666/william-p.-smith
