William Walter Soper was born in London on the 16th of February 1892. His parents, William Walter Soper and Mary Ann Bond, were both from Devon. William's father worked as a "bookmaker."
His mother died very soon after he was born. 9 months later, his father re-married to Alice Brown. William went to Wales and was raised by his grandmother and step-grandfather. William also lived with his Uncle Frank and Annie Dallimore - his grandparents' adopted daughter.
At the time of the 1901 census they were living in Roath. William was working as an assistant to his Uncle Frank who was a general labourer.
At the time of the 1911 census William was working as an apprentice blacksmith.
20 minutes away from where William lived in 1911, Catherine Maher was working as a domestic servant. They got married in 1912 and had 7 children:
