About William Daniel Sosebee

Birth: May 8, 1795 Spartanburg County South Carolina, USA Death: 1859 Pickens County Georgia, USA

He was a son of Job and Elizabeth Tankersley Sosebee. Job Sosebee was a Scout in the Continental Army, Revolutionary War.

After his father's death, along with his mother and most of his siblings, he migrated by wagon train from South Carolina to Habersham County, Georgia.

William and his wife, Nancy McMillen made their home in what is now Pickens County, Georgia, where they raised their family. Their children were:

Ephriam Rodney Sosebee 1819-1903 Job Sosebee 1826- Jeremiah Sosebee 1829- William Joseph Sosebee 1836- Henry Jasper Sosebee 1837- Martha Sosebee 1840- Drury Sosebee 1842- James L. Sosebee 1845 Rhoda Sosebee

William Sosebee was active in the Baptist faith, so much so that he gave a 'gift of deed' so that the Baptist Church could move closer to town.

On February 15, 1854, William D. Sosebee became the first elected sheriff of the newly formed Pickens County, Georgia. He served until 1856, was re-elected January 9, 1858 but died before July 6, 1859 when B. F. Hanie was elected to finish his term.

It is unknown if he died of disease or in the line of duty.

His sons went on to serve the CSA during the Civil War and made names for themselves as exemplary servicemen. Some of them are buried in the Cool Springs Church Cemetery, Pickens County so William Sosebee may be resting in an un-identified grave near them. This has not been proven so William D. Sosebee's grave-site continues to be a mystery.
