William Spears, b. ABT 1739 in Henrico County, Virginia (Chuck Zonker through his research shows that William Spears was born about 1735.), d. AFT 26 FEB 1796 in Cumberland County, Virginia. Property taxes were recorded first in 1782, and William and his sons are recorded in Cumberland as property owners. At the time of his death in 1796 he owned 9 slaves, 6 horses. The 1800 census records his wife as owning 8 slaves, 4 horses; William, Jr. 7 salves and six horses; Robert 7 slaves, 5 horses; James 6 slaves, 5 horses. Probably all of the family were tobacco farmers, and must have been reasonably successful. He married Sarah LNU, ABT 1756 in Cumberland County, Virginia, b. ABT 1740 in Cumberland County, Virginia, d. 11 Jul 1812 in Cumberland County, Virginia (Sarah possibly died in 1815.
