About William L. Stallworth
A Patriot of the American Revolution for SOUTH CAROLINA (Soldier). DAR Ancestor # A108340
According to the book by Hugh Wagner Stallworth entitled "Stallworths and Related Families" - William served in the Revolutionary Army from South Carolina. He also received a bounty land grant for his military service. He was a Pioneer. Records of Stallworths as early Virginia or Pennsylvania settlers have not been found. In all probability, Joseph, William, and Thomas Stallworth were immigrants, who landed in Virginia, and before acquiring property, joining a church or getting their names in public records, went to the Carolinas to settle near families who may have been their neighbors back in England. Many colonial records were lost when public buildings were burned during the wars.
In the 1790 Census Records of North Carolina and South Carolina, William is listed as "Wm. Saulsworth". It is reported in the above mentioned referrence that such incorrect spelling of surnames in public records was because of careless clerks recording names as they thought they sounded, and that there was a good bit of "phonetic illiteracy" at that time.
