On 23/7/1811 in Southampton, William (described as belonging to a tribe of gypsies) was charged with stealing a pony and was sentenced to transportation for life. He arrived in Hobart on 19/10/1812 on "Indefatigable"

William Stanley was sentenced to life on 23/7/1811 at the Winchester Court,Hampshire. He was sentenced for horse theft of a black mare pony at South Stoneham and selling it to a butcher at Droxford. At the time of this conviction there had been reports in the local papers about a "tribe of Gypsies who have for some time past infested the neighbourhood". William Stanley was a gypsy in England, came to Australia as a convict on the ship "Indefatigable" in the year 1812, he was transported for life ended up in Van Dieman's Land. He was of dark complexion, black hair, dark brown eyes, His estimated age at time of death was 96 years, although his death certificate indicates 111.
