WILLIAM STEWART OF EGILSAY

William Stewart of Egilsay is not the same person as William Stewart in Edinburgh

William Stewart of Egilsay was the illegitimate son of Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney and Lord of Shetland. The name of his mother is not known. The Scots Peerage VI: 575 In 1600 he was summoned to find caution for murdering his wife, a Bellenden. In 1609 he was a Colonel in Swedish service. [Peter D. William Stewart, here treated, may be the man of the same name who landed in Sweden in the middle of January 1610. Scots in Sweden: 73
