Notes

After additional research and assistance from Roy White and John Yani k, it appears that Jonas Thompson is not the father of William Thompson, h usband of Mary Fordyce. Much of this early data came from the book "Our Wi lliam Thompson" by May Thompson Williamson (Youngstown, Ohio 1941). This b ook I initially saw while doing research and the Texas State Library in Au stin some years ago. From this I took the Jonas was the father of Willia m. However, thanks to the work of Roy White (descendant of Lemuel Thomps on son of John "Theophilus") of Salt Lake City, he was able to find a co py in LDS records. After further review, May Williamson does not specifica lly state that Jonas was the father of William. In the Forward she state s; "Our coat of arms goes back to 1640-Jonas and Eleanor (Philips) Thompso n-who had a son William, of New Castle on Tyne".

With this in mind, she appears to be alluding the possibility of their ti e, but does not specifically state such. Thus my error some years ago w as taking this for gospel. In the works of JV Thompson and earlier wor ks of Gustav Anjou which have been brought to my attention by John Yanik J r., the line extends back to the mid 1400's to Johannes Thompson. This cou ld be some of the confusion with Jonas. However, this Johannes was born so me 150 years before Jonas. Johannes is however documented. There are a f ew other potential errors that I am working on and once cleared up if poss ible, I will make changes accordingly.

As to our Thompson ties to the various Scottish Clans, May Williamson stat es we are a part of Clan Campbell. This is debated by Clan MacTavish, whi ch states that all Thompson's of our lines are actually MacTavish's. Whi le MacTavish is the Gaelic rendition of Thompson, it must be noted that av ailable records back to the mid 1400's list us as Thompson not MacTavis h, with our possible ties to the Danes rather than early Celts. Thus addit ional research will be needed to definatively prove the tie. Clan MacTavis h, although claiming such ties on their web site does not offer assistan ce unless you are a member. I personally will not endorse or join them unl ess it can be proven we are tied to them. Previously I had much MacTavi sh data tied to this file. I am deleting it at this time pending addition al research to resolve the matter. JCT 2/10/2000

Additional note: May Thompson Williamson in the book "Ou William Thompso n" makes reference to "a beautiful castle in Scotland, Thompson Castle ". If such can be located, we may be able to determine clan affiliati on at that point. In speaking with Dugald MacTavish the Chief of Clan MacT avish, he had no knowledge of such a castle, which only supports that we m ay not be a part of Clan MacTavish.

Helen Wetnight, 365 Holly Hill Road, Oldsmar, FL 34677who cites a handwrit ten 9 page document prepared by Katherine Mayes Thompson states his wif e, Jennet, survived him many years. He died in Leith "polentarii burgensi s" before 25 Apr 1633
