This is my great-grandfather that most folks called "Willie". He and his children started Pine Hill Dairy just outside of Reidsville, North Carolina back in 1922 on the present day South Park Drive. I read in an old issue of the Reidsville Review that the Rockingham County Agricultural Extension Agent suggested that since the land they owned wasn't suitable to raise tobacco that instead start a dairy and bottle and package their products and offer home deliveries.
According the article, the first day they delivered to three homes in Reidsville. There were to be four homes, but the mule refused to cross the railroad tracks in order to reach the forth one. Sometime later the Trent family opened and operated the Pine Hill Dairy Bar which served ice cream, milkshakes and other treats as such on South Scales Street in Reidsville. The site of this business is currently in a newer building known as Turk's Sports Food and Drink.
In December of 1958, they stopped production of Pine Hill products to become a Sealtest distributor until the late 70's to early 80's when direct delivery became the norm. The dairy was located just north of Reidsville High School and is now a housing subdivision.
