About William Wadley, Convict "Eliza" 1831

William WADLEY, was one of the ‘Swing Rioters’. He lived in 'Long Cromish', an alternative name for Crowmarsh Gifford, used occasionally in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It presumably reflected the shape of the village - along a single street - as shown on the OXFORDSHIRE COUNTY MAP. The brothers, WILLIAM and THOMAS (who were both transported to Van Diemen's Land) therefore came from Crowmarsh Gifford. The parish registers show that Thomas was baptised there, but there is no mention of WILLIAM.

Two brothers, WILLIAM and THOMAS WADLEY were transported to Van Diemen's Land on the ELIZA, arriving on the 28th May, 1831; having been tried on the 3rd January 1831 at the Oxford Quarter Sessions for machine-breaking. Their native place was LONG CROMISH (Crowmarsh Gifford). George Rude's book, "Protest and Punishment" (Oxford, 1978), gives background information on the POLITICAL PROTESTORS transported for machine-breaking.

The convict records in the Archives Office of Tasmania states as follows:

WILLIAM WADLEY: CON 31/46: CONDUCT RECORD: Transported on the ELIZA arriving 28 may 1831. Sentenced at Oxford on the 3 January 1831 to seven years. NATIVE PLACE: Long Cromish William Wadley married Sarah Bates on the 27th December 1836. Sarah being ? the sister of Rebecca Bates. The only indication of when Sarah and Rebecca may have arrived in the colony, is the reference to the arrival of Mrs. Bates, Mary Ann and Rebecca Bates on the ship, MANSFIELD on the 27 August, 1832 (CSO 1/609/13903).

William and Sarah had eight children: Joseph (my Great Great grandfather, born 1838), William(1844), Sarah(1845), Ellen(1847), John(1849), Eliza(1851), Louisa(1854)& James(1858).
